If you look at picture 1, the coin detecting lever is elongated and points over the top of the second reel. I think this originally would have been parallel to the first section. In this shape, when you come to play the second pull, the section that you have bent parallel to the first will be behind...

I would have thought at 2 new pence a go, it must have given a win around 1 in 10/15 to make money and still make punters play the machine. Has it got a Caille mechanism in it? Copies or revampers tend to go with the most popular model, or cabinet style. You can maybe easily do different versions. So it's a little strange that the 4 reeler version was copied, unless it is easy to switch this version to the standard 3 reel version by may...

I think what he needs after spending all this time and effort on the machine is an original cash drawer cover plate. Not easy or cheap to source but the best option. However, options usually depend on what the poster intends to do with machine afterwards and what funds available to complete the work...
