Strangely the vintage arcade page has not been re-formatted at all, it copied straight across. I didn't change any positions or sizes. Must be just the background you don't like.

That's strange, as I also thought, like 13rebel, that the pictures of the Arcades were cut down in size.

I've just checked it myself and it has to be the way the new page has dropped them in. Some are smaller, some are actually bigger! (man playing pinball, trade stand and others). When I get time I'll look to enlarge the smaller ones.

Picture resizing often caused by differences in the web software used. e.g. something made a long time ago using Frontpage (and lot of them about) goes completely bonkers when inputted into Adobe Dreamweaver. Small settings like 'constrain dimensions' on images can cause them to go too large or different shape, tables can operate differently, large images might not be optimized in something like photoshop and merely resized on the HTML page by clicking on image and shrinking down with mouse etc. Small detail really and easily put back. This likely explains the differences and certainly nothing to do with the new hosting provider; whether it Linux or Windows based server.

Thanks, the intention is to preserve Stuart's original work and every effort will be made to return the images to the best standard possible.
Currently we're exploring tracing paper and crayons.

Well done chaps, good to know that the info will still be in the public domain.

Just one comment, I agree with 13rebel, in my opinion the black pages are too oppressive and too dominant, taking the viewers eye away from the pictures, especially the smaller pics of allwins - just my own thoughts and not a criticism.

Good feedback thanks.
Originally we were hoping they'd be enough of a distraction while we picked your pockets.

ive finished the arcade page now,photos enlarged(where possible) and positioning corrected,for those viewing on phones Im afraid it will always look a bit small,as this is an information site we have decided to design for larger screens.
The Hawtin's page has been added and, we think , looks good. http://www.penny-arcade.info/the-hawtin-collection

Not so straightforward to achieve as one may initially suspect.
Paul has put a lot of work into this and has been kept off the streets for many a night ...... ;-)

Don't know if it's just me but the pictures are very stretched when viewed on a mobile device?

Thing is, a decision had to be made which kind of device to make the website most compatible with.
The options were .....
1) Laptops/PCs/Phones/ Tablets .... in other words everything.
2) Just portable gizmos.
3) Just dedicated computers.

Option 1 was possible but seemed to cause a loss of quality across the board regardless of device.
Option 2 created more work and seemed to sacrifice definition on PCs & Laptops
Option 3 enabled us to concentrate more on the bigger better picture. Seeing that appeared important to everyone, and that due to the average age of slotties being somewhere between senility and decomposition that's the route we went.

We aren't unsympathetic to you young 'Uns that use pocket telephones for everything except making calls. It's just that most of us still have home based machinations and I personally have only just realised that they there tablet ones aren't an Etch A Sketch.
Thanks for your comments though.

You can build sites to detect the device using the pages to deliver the frames appropriate and resize. A lot of website hosting companies offer simple to use tools to allow the building of sites to address. I have one that reframed whether on mobile, tablet or pic and resize to fit.

yes we can, but it takes more time and effort, the host doesn't seem to have much in the way of conversion tools but they are adding components (not our choice of hosts ,just inherited, when our contract runs out later in the year we MIGHT look at changing hosts),Id prefer to be on Go Daddy because I know the tools and they have the most modern set of tools,for the moment we have to change all the pages (which we didn't expect) if we seriously want to add new pages and content to existing ones,its a lot of work even before we can consider expanding the site. Im highlighting the new additions to the new site on this thread just to keep people involved and making suggestions,all of which are useful...even if we dont use them :lol:

Are you able to edit your site code? I make extensive use of the following to scale images to any device:

HTML:

Code: Select all

<img src="myimage.jpg" class="img-response" />
CSS:

Code: Select all

.img-response {
max-width: 100%;
height: auto;
}

Thanks we'll give that a spin.

By the way Mr.P I posted you a present a while back, guessing you would guess whom it was from. Then I sent you a pm from here, asking what you thought of it, still no response.

Did you not get it?
Have you moved?
Were you only slightly offended?

Some more pages transferred to new site and new content added to them including this interesting video inside a derelict arcade in the Isle of Wight. A few old machines can be see as the camera passes through.

Ha Ha! I didn't see the PM - will go and have a look for it now. I did get the present, thank you - and for a full ten seconds (before the badpenny dropped) thought, "who the hell sent this? ...and why?" Taking full advantage of my new license, I've converted our home into a public gaming house - you should see the queue this morning!
