Mechanical THINGS at Thinktank Birmingham

I have just got back from visiting this brilliant exhibition put on by the Rowland Emett Society and the Cabaret Mechanical Theatre Traveling Exhibition with support from other automaton makers.

In order to showcase Roland Emett’s work the RES are showing Emett’s last and biggest creation ‘A Quiet Afternoon in Cloud Cuckoo Valley’ which comprises of eight separate ‘Things’, as Emmet called his creations. Also included is the flying car from Chitty, Chitty Bang, Bang and the Little Dragon Carpet Sweeper also from the same film.

Backing up Emett’s ‘Things’ are a display of automatons from CMT; the works of Keith Newstead, Paul Spooner and many others are there for visitors to press the buttons or wind the handles to bring their creations to life.

Mechanical Things is open until Sunday the 5th March and for those interested in working models it is well worth a visit if you can get to the venue which is near the Birmingham Bullring Centre. There is a multistory carpark in Cardigan Street with a short level walkway across to Thinktank.
