Should I remove the electric lights?

Post by markjbevan »

Hi guys,
As you may recall from my earlier posts, I have a Jubilee Riviera on 2p play. I have just bought another, but this one it is on 10p play.
My 2p machine came with the electrics removed (tubes, starter, wiring, etc) apparently for safely reasons, however, my second machine has the lights and wiring present and working!
I have the machines in the "games room" where the kids play them, so my question is should I remove the lights etc from the 10p machine too as has been done with the 2p model, or is it safe to keep illuminated? It has a 3a fuse in the plug if this is relevant.

Also, on the 2p machine ocassionally you get a winning line that doesnt pay, and a few times, but not often, the payout does not "pull in" after the reels are stopped (winning combination or not). Is there anyone locally (Midlands) who could do a "service" and make sure everything is set up ok?

Thanks in advance, Mark

Easiest option if you're worried is just don't plug it in, and remove the fuse as a fail safe. Worth more in the long run as the next owner may want to restore them.

Your payout issue is most likely to be the cycle not always completing due to the clock spring being incorrectly tensioned. It could also be a combination of other issues down to the kind of things you'd expect a good service to iron out.

You don't say where in the midlands you are. I have a regular client group of other collectors' bandits I look after. And if you want to learn I'm happy to teach you. You will need to invest a day to visit Lincoln though. You'd end up with a serviced machine and the knowledge to do it yourself plus how your machine works and tips for troubleshooting.

Gameswat's comment is A1. The ultimate decision what you do is yours only. Whenever I acquire a new machine that incorporates electricity I first: -
With the power off check it's earthed with a wire bolted to all separate metal components that then lead to the earth pin on the plug
Examine the insulation on all wires within the machine for cracks or bare wires especially on bends or where they could chafe

Happy with that I turn the power on and use ........

Voltage tester screwdriver
I paid 99p for mine from the local cut price corner shop.
By merely touching all of the metal parts of the machine that should not be getting a feed you'll know immediately if you have any leaks of the fizzy bighty stuff.

However the choice is yours
I think I know what I'm doing
I don't have children

Hi guys, many thanks - some good advice! I think I will chck the things Badpenny suggested (I have a few pinball machines to and do the same with them), and probably leave it unplugged for now as with the two standing side by side it would look odd with one lit up and one not.

Thanks Badpenny, I will check out the things you suggested re; electricity, however I will probably leave the mechanical things alone for now as I would be worried about making things worse (and at the moment, everything works ok pretty much, touch wood).

I'm a few miles outside of Wolverhampton in a village called Wombourne. Thanks for the offer of coming to Lincoln too - I would love to learn more about these and how they work, and it would be nice for someone who knows what theyre' doing to take a look and see if anything needs adjusting. Will let you know. What sort of money would it cost for a "service" on a Jubilee Riviera?

Thanks again, cheers., Mark

Polaris's idea is the best I believe, if it was meant to have lights then give it lights, nice new leds that dont bite or get hot and crack the artwork, Bendable led strips can do wonders for a machine. solid stips are even better,if they fit. The key is to keep the full set you remove, then they can go with the machine if you sell it,the next owner then has to make the choice.
I fitted this Jennings with led strips, not a good photo but you can see the nice way the lights highlight the belly glass

Hi guys,
Thanks for the advice, especially re; LED's. I hadn't thought of that!

Hi Jingle, I would have done the same..... even though I rarely have any space, if I see something for a good price I can't help buying it!

Cheers,

Mark
