Grease!!

Post by coppinpr »

Next time someone asks you why we don't like grease on our machines, show them these photos of the Jennings clock I've just stripped down and cleaned.

When I first saw the clock I thought the blob on top (marked with a arrow in the photo) was some sort of metal dome on top of the bearing. It was a half inch high blob of grease !PUKE! Things got worse once I got inside. What seems to be a recent application of oil or de-greaser had melted the top layer into the goo you can see in the photos covering a hard layer of oxidised ancient grease. The ratchets on the large gear were frozen solid. A 3d coin, a 1p coin and a rogue screw didn't become apparent until I removed the layer of grease sticking them fast to the inside of the cover plates.

When I finally got it all cleaned and re assembled I thought it was making a strange sound...but it was the clock breathing a sigh of relief!

Must admit I enjoyed doing it, very rewarding
