Re: Academics on the rise and future of vintage arcades in contemporary seaside resorts

I was going to round off this little discussion by saying how ironic that you hate inland arcades so much as historically if it wasn't for inland arcades you wouldn't have most of the old slot machines you collect today. All of the big characters, good and bad, from our great Amusement Industry , an...

Re: Academics on the rise and future of vintage arcades in contemporary seaside resorts

Seeing as you brought up your point which you thought would be controversial, I'm all for debating a subject I'm familiar with. Having re-read your post, and your subsequent amendments I still don't see how your holiday visit to the seaside arcades left you with the view of "full of people tryi...

Re: Academics on the rise and future of vintage arcades in contemporary seaside resorts

I understand Seaside Arcades from a nostalgic viewpoint but again, a recent visit to one on holiday this year only went to reinforce my point above, full of people trying to earn a living out of the machines rather than recognising them as entertainment. Short of being very rude..........Yes, arcad...

Re: Academics on the rise and future of vintage arcades in contemporary seaside resorts

When I won a hand pay jackpot at the Luxor in Vegas the host had me fill in an ITIN form and the casino paid me in full, no tax deduction. It took about 40 mins to do.

Re: Temple’s Penny Arcade Trailer Project

It's a nice feeling isn't it, which is why I'm often at mine at busy weekends out at the front giving pennies away to bring families in. I think it's very rewarding after all the effort you've made to see how well received the old machines always are, and much better than them just squirrelled away ...

Re: What is your dream machine?

I wanted a Aherns Pile Driver that was in Mablethorpe. Rubbish to play but the workmanship was amazing. I would visit it whenever I was in the town but the owner was not interested in selling. The last time I went to see it the owner had died and the machine gone. One of the guys in there said it h...

Re: Temple’s Penny Arcade Trailer Project

Looks great! It occurs to me that you could have two painted wooden supports (like 4" x 2") that bolt together at the ends to form a V shape arrangement, projecting out from each front corner of the trailer and out toward the towing ball end and supported with an upright post, meeting at a...

Re: Putting Coinslot archive online

We stand corrected re location of the work. It was however 'missing' for a number of years and only reappeared in its rightful place after publication of the book. Of course no museum curator will admit this but it was definitely the case back then. As 'unassuming' as the Dennison book is it is a r...

Re: Still need a 1p S10 Mechanism

Over the years many of these and the other floor standing Bell Fruit machines have sold and often for very little. The appeal of these is the theme/glass with fighter plane and some may pay for this, but luck of the draw. A colleague of mine had a load of them and other similar machines, knocking t...

Re: Who kept check on the operators ?

Something I’ve been wondering about and, I’m sure some of our older collectors will help me with, is were their ever inspections of the operators and their machines to make sure they were not fiddling the payouts ? With stories about payout fingers being removed and award disk holes being filled up...
