Re: Dingles Fairground Museum

We're in a similar position in that it's coming closer to us! !!THUMBSX2!!
I did enjoy a trip there in my summer hols to Devon a few years ago, thoroughly enjoyed the arcade.
I'll be interested to see how it all looks after the move.

Re: Punch and Judy Allwin - rough value?

I think this nicely illustrates the different thinking of an operator and a collector. Of course you can have operators who are also collectors. I once got a bit of a telling off from John Carter, at an Auction, when I mentioned it was nice to see him back collecting. ( this was soon after his disp...

Re: Confused Puppet Show?

Update on the 'label'... I spotted a peeled area on it and opened it, and voilà, it's not a label, it's a folded flyer by the looks of things. It seems to say Heartbeat Presents and mentions a Holiday Camp in Cleethorpes, (amongst other places) but scratching my head !PUZZLED! why that's in there! U...

Funnily enough, for the price point I thought the exact same!

Re: Punch and Judy Allwin - rough value?

Tagging this on here, but do remove if not applicable. Just purchased one of these for a couple of hundred, and impressed by usability. Did a bit of a repaint on it and I think it looks the business. Honestly, a super cheap addition to working arcades in my humble opinion. !!THUMBSX2!! https://youtu...

Re: Confused Puppet Show?

UPDATE: Started on this proper now and some good news and some bad... Good - The motor works! !!THUMBSX2!! Bad - Found a label but as you can see.... :HaHa: Indifferent News - Appears the 'Pelham' Puppets are almost certainly fake (even though I found one wrapped in 1974 Oldham newspaper). :o Onward...

Re: Fortune Teller Machine Finished!

That's really nice, well done. I was hoping you were going to let us see the internal gubbins, but you're playing your tarot cards close to your chest! Thank you; I appreciate that! Actually, I never thought to show the internals (mainly because behind there it's a mess!) :HaHa: I'll do anoth...

Re: Fortune Teller Machine Finished!

Thank you, very kind of you to say as such. I basically studied the Bryans postcard cabinet and after a couple of years of not being able to trace one online to buy, I built it from scratch. It includes lots of off cuts from my other attractions, and the top is even a bit of Aluminium from an old 19...

Fortune Teller Machine Finished!

So some time ago there was a lovely Fortune Teller machine for sale for thousands of pounds  (stated it was from Harrods on the listing) and I didn't win it. Thank goodness though, because my Mrs pestered and pestered me, to the point where I thought I'll just make her a similar one. :D I can...

Re: Confused Puppet Show?

It certainly isn't fake. Scratch-built perhaps, but as you say, it doesn't look it. I'd expect a homemade case to have less style and finish. For a one-off, painted ply would be easier and cheaper than laminating chipboard, but the opposite applies when manufacturing. Always nice, but sometimes imp...

Re: Confused Puppet Show?

@bryansfan & @moonriver - exactly my thoughts; my plan is to save as much of the original as possible and where I can't I'll replicate. I'm still stuck on the fortune teller build at the moment (going out on hire so up against time) but still very much looking forward to pulling the puppet show ...

@bryansfan - this is a dead cert; it's what drew us to the show in the first place!
@brigham - oh do let me know if you remember where; may lend a clue to the maker!

Re: Confused Puppet Show?

Righteo, a few photo's as promised (sorry if too many - tried to photograph areas the auction house didn't). The cabinet is all for the tip, replace with ply and sympathetically copy the clown design, reattach the glass and superb puppet show sign. Remove each piece of the mech, clean and check/repl...

Re: Confused Puppet Show?

Well I'm back! !!THUMBSX2!! Too dark to take photo's but wanted to give you all an update. CONS - The 8 hour round trip to collect it. As seen in @pennymachines auction photo's above, the case is completely rotten. PROS - The front, glass and top sign are all good, coin mech's in there, all the prim...

Re: Confused Puppet Show?

As cjfenny's machine has the 'PUPPET SHOW' sign with strings drawn on the lettering, and the cam and horizontal tilting rails the puppets strings are tied to are in the top of the cabinet it makes sense it was always string puppets. Yes, I came to the same conclusion, The header seemed to suggest m...

JC wrote: Wed Jan 31, 2024 12:30 am So do we know who produced the Sooty machines? And what about the Old King Cole machines? I've always thought they were all pretty horrendous, but my antipathy is beginning to soften.
Love the Old King Cole machines myself, just because of childhood memories of it.

Re: Confused Puppet Show?

Well folks, I'm on my way to pick this monstrosity up! :HaHa: When I return, I'll have a cuppa and get some better photo's for you all...nothing like gaining some sympathy for the project I'll be taking on. I'm hoping somewhere there maybe some clues to the maker. I know when I've seen other arcade ...

Re: Confused Puppet Show?

A noble project. Hopefully you'll post a video here of ìt all restored and working sometime in the future. The cabinet's use of Formica and black plastic edge trim is similar to Hillcrest's. Same blue piano too. Ooh thanks so much for this photo; very helpful indeed! !!THUMBSX2!! Yes, and funnily e...
