Re: Bally Gay Cruise running on unusual coin

I was shocked that when they decimalised, since they had a 1/2 p coin, why they couldn't have also had a 2 1/2 p coin, thus avoiding the need to demonetize the popular 6 d denomination, to which it would have been equivalent.

Re: Bell Fruit Three Penny Supreme

I found this machine to be very interesting. On this site, I had learned about British machines with payout schedules very different from those of American slot machines in order to cope with the legal limitation to a maximum payout of 12 pence (one shilling, 5 new pence). This one follows the conve...

Re: interesting photo

That would make sense if they were scales used in grocery stores for selling produce or meat by weight.

When they're used to tell people how much they weigh, though, it makes no sense. But the wording of the statute may have led to this.

Spangles twins? It looks like I've just learned the source of Ian Fleming's inspiration for some minor villainous characters in one of his James Bond novels.

Re: How many cherries?

I think, though, that explaining it on the basis that another reel strip set, similar to V12-70, but not found in the Handbook of Slot Machine Reel Strips, is on that machine, so that nobody's calculations need to be wrong, is possible. That book contains all the reel strips recorded by readers who ...

Re: How many cherries?

I'll give you a link to the post: https://www.facebook.com/brightsantique.slotmachines/posts/2467049016876229?__tn__=-R Thank you for letting me know about the existence of the Casino-J reel strips. Re: How many cherries?

I've seen an advertisement on FaceBook for a slot machine described as 40% restored, but with original payout card and reel strips. It is a 1947 Jennings Standard Chief. Its payout schedule includes pays on 1, 2 and 3 cherries, so it has cherries on the third reel. If that is even possible, it means...

Re: How many cherries?

Having said all that, Jennings muddied the waters as early as 1920 by having a lemon on the third reel which, to all intents, could well have been a cherry, for it was only in use as the cherry-cherry-Lemon winner I don't quite understand you here, because wasn't that nearly always the case on the ...

Re: How many cherries?

It's nice looking, but I'd never be content with it. I fear there are Herberts out there who would rub there hands at the thought of buying in order to bamboozle the unaware. It's nice to encounter a fellow Star Trek fan. Just because an authentic War Eagle could possibly exist with single-cherry p...

Re: How many cherries?

And that was a pre-war machine too... at least by American standards, as it dated from 1941.
So owning one in the UK might be difficult, unless some were sold to operators in the UK after the end of the war. Otherwise, one would have to buy one in the U.S. and have it shipped across the Atlantic!

Re: How many cherries?

That is basically the same advertisement as the one I found, except for being set in a different face: jennings_super_ad3.jpg And I later found the exact advertisement in the August 19, 1939 issue of Billboard, on page 75: jennings_super_ad7.jpg Incidentally, I also looked on the Web for pictures of...

Re: How many cherries?

It is true that the Jennings Super Chief dates from 1939. I could only find three surviving examples pictured on the Internet, all had double-cherry payout. It is true that single-cherry pay was offered on Jennings post-war machines. The first three of them were the Bronze Chief, the Super Deluxe Cl...

Re: How many cherries?

Jennings had single cherry in late thirties...... Although Jennings appears to be the first to switch from lemons on the third reel to cherries on the third reel, in making an extensive search of Billboard and Automatic Age to learn about the evolution of slot machine payouts, I've seen no evidence...

Re: How many cherries?

I think we now have enough evidence to ascertain that single cherry pay out on Mills machines didn't appear pre WWII. Huh? I thought this thread contained proof that, contrary to what I had thought, single cherry payout did originate in 1939, shortly before World War II started. Also it rules out W...

Re: Today's quiz "name that machine"

I'm surprised no one answered the easy one; 20 is a Mills Extraordinary. Oh, but that was named in the initial post, which also identified the one to its left as a Buckley. The one on its right is clearly a Mills Silent Bell of some type, but I'll have to look harder to see which one. Ah, no. I took...

Re: How many cherries?

I knew about the pre-war Melon Bell, although I never saw that incorrect flyer! That at least settles that it is the watermelon it looks like, rather than a true melon like a Honeydew. Or are watermelons really melons? Looks like a trip to Wikipedia is in order to sort out this botanical mystery! Bo...

Re: How many cherries?

I don't remember cherries on the third reel until the electro-era. They still look wrong to me.The single-cherry payout is usually ascribed to the Mills Chrome Bell, of January 1939, at least according to the advertising blurb of the day. I have seen, on page 160 of Lemons, Cherries, and Bell-Fruit...

Re: Sega Mad Money reel strips

I thank you very much for this image! However, I am puzzled about one thing. If the image as given is printed on A3 paper, each slot machine symbol will apparently take up 3.5 cm exactly. That implies the reels have a diameter of 8.772319... inches (and in metric, the reciprocal of pi being involved...

I see I was mistaken about the cherry on the third reel; it wasn't introduced with the first series of post-war Jennings machines. I will keep looking to see if I can pin it down.

Re: How many cherries?

I get fearful when I see the likes of a War Eagle or Castle Front with a pay out on single cherry As well you might! Of course machines can have their payouts altered, and not only by misguided collectors. When single-cherry payouts became fashionable, or, for that matter, when paying out 18 coins ...
