It's not merely enough for the vertical finger to pass through all the three discs. It must do so and still be under tension, otherwise it won't have the energy to move and hold the relevant horizontal finger clear of the slide it's supposed to release.

No problems. The pneumatic damper or air pump stops the handle from returning too quickly and noisily when the player lets go of it. Chroming (in UK) will cost more than the value of the machine.
I have never seen a tray cut that way, perhaps it was done to allow coins to drop out of the bottom.
Extending the cut vertical fingers is possible. You will need to remove them to do this.

Well spotted! A common trick, performed by many machine operators. It was easy for them to do. I am concerned that the operator may have done this fake to other fingers also. Before we look at how to repair it, I suggest you check every sequence of payouts to confirm that it is the only finger that ...
