Re: Charlie and Mabel in the Park
However , the theme, featuring Charlie Chaplin and Mabel Normand in the park, harks back to the first scene from a silent film they made under Mack Sennett in 1914, called Mabel's Married Life . Mr PM suggests that the theme comes from Mable's Married Life but I think the more likely candidate is G...

Re: Happy Halloween
Scary or not, did they start off green or was that the great cooks that schools had? Alperton secondary school, Wembley, was built before Queen Victoria ascended the throne and there were no cooking facilities so the meals were delivered from a central kitchen at 8.45 each morning in a 10 ton ex-Ar...

What’s so new about green sausages? They used to serve them up at school when I was a kid in the 1950’s; very clever, you just stabbed them with a fork and a green puss oozed out.

Certainly is Mr PM; I really enjoy these type of mechanical puzzles and I 'Take my hat off' at those who designed them in the first place.

Oh dear; or words to that effect! I wish I had seen the description in Arena and Treefrog's link; it would have saved me an hour's typing.

Hi Scottie, Clearly the teeth are part of a ratchet system that controls the carousel and moves it around. However the problem is complicated by the fact that in Mr PM’s photo the long horizontal lever, at the top of the door, is missing, as is the ratchet lifting arm that drops down from it to the ...

eBay and PayPal Linked Accounts
On Friday I sniped in a bid on an item a few seconds before the end and a box immediately popped up stating that the ‘Seller had refused the bid’ because certain conditions had not been met. Reading further I found that the bid was refused because I had not linked my eBay and PayPal accounts. The sn...

Re: The most unusual trade stimulator ever?
I find it hard to believe that a big company like Shell could produce something as crude as this, even as a prototype, and surely they wouldn't label it 'Shell Quick Starting Gasoline' if it was lighter fuel. No, certainly not made by Shell. It looks to me as if it has been made in a back garden she...

Re: Q about Flash
I have this problem with a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" tablet and I still have it. The home page flashes up ok but directly I touch the forum tab the forum page flashes up for a split second and then disappears to leave just an empty beige page. It only seems to be the forum page that is effected t...

Re: Achieving crackle paint effect à la Bryans
I purchased some Rust-oleum Crackle Base to see what, if any, other patterns I could make other than the standard grid style. (I have not used the Crackle Top coat on these test pieces) Following the instructions (to the letter) of brushed straight lines for the first emulsion coat followed by brush...

Re: Achieving crackle paint effect à la Bryans
I understood from the Rust-oleum website that the base coat is clear so I presume that an underlying colour will show through the cracks. In the video it appears to me that the girl is applying the clear crackle base coat over a beige emulsion undercoat. On the B&Q web page both the Rust-oleum b...

Re: any info on this mills machine ?
In Dieter Ladwig's book Slot Machines the machine is listed as a Mills Extrabell Aitkens Front and is dated 1946. It is a re-work of a pre-war machine due to war shortages and cost $77.50.

Re: Achieving crackle paint effect à la Bryans
Searching around for Rust-oleum paints I found this Rusto-leum video of their crackle base and finish coat products in use. (I like the idea of a cup of tea before making a start). It suggests any vinyl matt emulsion paint can be used with their crackle products. It is brush applied but the crackles...

Re: Achieving crackle paint effect à la Bryans
Hi Polaris, I certainly think that the Bryan’s crackle finish would have been applied with a spray gun as I can’t imagine that there would have been very much time on spent hand finishing any of the components. I don't know if you can spray PVC type adhesives; perhaps they did use a roller. I also s...

Re: Achieving crackle paint effect à la Bryans
I have been researching crackle finish coatings as my next ‘Build it’ project, after I have completed the Worlborl, I hope will be a Bryan’s Retreeva with a crackle finish case. I found this video on YouTube which could, I think, give a very good Bryan’s style finish using a PVA type adhesive (Elmer...

At long last I've managed to get my piece of Oak cut on Saturday and I have now completed a Standard Bryan’s case. It still needs a bit more surface preparation before it can be varnished, which I will do after a trial fitting of the door, stops, locks, coin shoot and coin tray. Bryans Case 1.PNG John

Re: Who remembers this amazing dice gambling machine?
Regarding Rippys dice with holes in the spots; I wonder if these could have been read by pneumatic equipment. If a table akin to a small air hockey game was used air could be drawn through the holes at a constant rate with a vacuum pump to create a vacuum below the table surface. If such a table had...
