Re: Amusement Equipment Co. Ltd. catalogue

Both Robot and Eric are well-known, yet I've never seen an example of either.
Are there any known survivors?

Re: Whittaker Brothers Le Mans 1d Play

The Greyhound racer had an oval track, with an extra, non-playable track just for the hare, which I thought was a nice touch. The Whittaker Le Mans had a strange pseudo-figure-8 track, which suggested that it crossed-over in the middle, which it didn't. It was a single, endless track with a 'winning...

Re: Whittaker Brothers Le Mans 1d Play

There was a greyhound version, and also a Kentucky Derby one, featuring sulky racing.
Whether or not these versions were also by Whittakers remains to be seen. The coin-slot industry has a long history of different makers building the same thing.

Try to avoid 'mixed date' pennies from eBay sellers. They are certainly mixed, but they are all invariably ancient and thin.
Stick to the present Queen or her dad. Unissued 1967 ones are readily available in quantity, and worth the little extra cost.

Re: Jennings Governor Rebuild flyer

There was a New Penny version available in the early '70s, which I remember reading about in World's Fair. A whole row appeared at (probably) Butlin's Filey, and were an impressive sight, in a Las Vegas sort of way. Can't remember who produced them, but I thought the top glass with dodgem cars let t...

Re: Hi from new member

Nice to hear that The Clock is working fine. It should be a simple restoration. All the missing artwork is here in 'Resources', and people here can even print it up for you, ready to fit. Allwins contain much ingenuity, but the basic principles are straightforward and simple. Once you've seen a comp...

Re: Aristocrat

I never saw a 'pokie' Aristocrat in use, although I was restricted to the arcades early on. By the time I got into the 'Licensed Premises' it was all electro-mechanical consoles, with credit counters, hold-and-draw and front-mounted 'butterfly' start levers. Bandits in NE England were either fruit o...

Re: Cromptons Penny On Ice 1d Play

What a state these got into after years of rough service. The deep scoring of the swept area, plus the broken-off legs of the glass ballerina, circling forlornly like something from an antique land.
The memories!

Definitely a decimal update, this one.
I remember it well. The white car (occasionally) paid 1/-.

That looks to be a Mills Poinsettia, but with a double jackpot conversion.
Pace, perhaps?

Re: Bally machine running on unusual coin

I don't know a lot about it.
I get it confused with the famous 'timewarp' arcade at Mablethorpe. I've not seen photos of either, although there is film of the interior of the Margate one.

Re: Streets Wheel Em In

Catching the coins being chucked down the glass was a big part of the fun in playing the large version. Watching people scrabbling to catch the coins always reminded me of seagulls squabbling over a spilled bag of chips; an undignified display of greed. I never imagined a single-player Wheel-'em-In...

Re: Unusual 1920s Mills machine

The famous Mills fruit symbols were 20 to the reel even before 20-stop mechs were even thought of. Mills opened-out the reel window so as to expose three symbols on each reel, rather than just the ones on the payout line. It gave extra excitement, because it produced the 'just-one-off' factor. It wa...

Re: Shields Football multiplay machine

It's in the same vein as Crompton's Derby, or the various Whittaker-style Roulettes. It would be great to have a list of what actually survives, and in what condition. That way, things would have a better chance of survival when storage becomes unavailable. To start such a list, I have a (Pugh's) 2-...

Re: Coin operated petrol pumps

The THEO Multiple isn't the coin-op pump shown. Two different pumps are described, the BMR being the coin-op one.

The THEO Multiple is something of an icon: It's the 'old pump' that looks like a lighthouse!
