According to Paul Braithwaite's arcades and slot machines book, Arthur Burrows formed the Burrows Automatic Supply Co in 1929 (becoming a limited company in 1931) and it came to an end in 1939 due to the outbreak of WWII. He had been active since around 1900 and in his career he operated arcades and sold new and refurbished machines. I assume the sign featured outside one of his later arcades.

Do you collect coin operated items or advertising material?

Hi, I collect advertising material particularly pre-war petrol and oil related enamels, plus motor oil tins but I am a bit fussy seeking items that are different.

Thought I had seen this sign before, which sold at the last elephant auction, lovely item but the most expensive light up sign I have seen at £880 plus commission. Rare old thing though. Always wondered what the connection was between the late Michael Jordan and Burrows, as he used that named on this site, maybe related.....

Burrows always seemed to have had some of the most unusual and interesting machines of the day in their stock including the "Auto Talkie" and the "Human Analyst" but the one I'd like to know more about is the "Win a Watch". The only photo I can find is tiny and unclear. Now I have won a watch on a slot machine but that was in the 1980s, on a modern pub slot, and the watch was a cheap electric watch. In 1932 watches were not cheap. What style was this machine? It could not have had a high payout ratio, perhaps you won a token that you saved up till you had enough to cash in for a watch. Anyone have any info?

An Ingersoll watch was 5/-.
Could this have been the origin of the 5/- Gold Award?
