I'd bet a monkey to a chimp your typewriter was designed for the Shakespeare-Infinite monkey theorem.Gameswat wrote:. I stripped the lock from a strange old typewriter that only wrote nonsensical rubbish.
It only failed because although they had opposable thumbs they couldn't unlock them.

To clarify for everyone's sake I decided to photograph the front of the lock and compare with a normal non dated version. But to my amazement while scavenging I pulled out yet another example with the magic date!?! I really do need to look through my stuff more often. Now as can be seen on the long necked lock that was produced in some other year there is no extra stamping on the back to commemorate the coronation. The two I have are serialed #4027 XE & #4971 XE in the keyholes. Quite charming really that the company bothered to add that tiny touch of class to such a utilitarian object.

I guess you've got the Pacific Rim market cornered there.
As for the added touch, I remember when this country manufactured stuff and was proud.
Then we voted a grocer's daughter in ...... don't start me!

Re: Lock Lock, who's there..........
Just a thought. could these locks have been made by union as gov issue? For embassy use perhaps? things like brief cases, typewriter cases, drop file cases etc, nothing really secure just for day to day use. If they had a large order the stamp might have been part of the contract. A change from G R to E R may well have carried the 1953 date.
GS will need to get an Imperial Airways(Qantas division) De Havilland D.H.86 out of Melbourne
How silly of you BP Dan-air only operated DC3's internationally to Rotterdam,Ostend and Basle. However if you manage to get here by Dan Air Dakota be assured I'll be in the audience rooting for you

Tut tut Coppin, Gameswat is in Perth not Melbourne ........
However your suggestion about Government issue and that Gameswat had stolen a typewriter from a council office one dark Tuesday night may have substance.

tut tut BP, I know hes in Perth,
he will need to trek to Melbourne to catch that flight, or he could wait for the Qantas Brisbane to Darwin flight to pass through Perth (Sundays) and change to the Imperial airways flight in Darwin (Tuesdays) then hey presto hes in London 8 and a half days later !! Unfortunately weight restrictions on the D.H.86 mean he could not bring that machine in Australia you so dearly covert

Possibly Coppinpr...? I tried asking Union themselves in case they had someone curating their history. But just passed onto a small lock museum they suggested might help. Looked through my keys as well for clues, usually just Uniuon and the number, or otherwise they're stamped "Made for Sankey Sheldon Ltd" who unsurprisingly made steel office cabinets. I've savaged quite a few locks and loose keys over the years from old lockers and desks etc.coppinpr wrote:Just a thought. could these locks have been made by union as gov issue? I've Googled "savaged locks" and found a photo of some poor sod having his head mauled by a tiger.
Most unpleasant.
