Facebook against ebay items

Post by jingle »

My mate as been telling me to
Get on facebook for ages as he sells
Loads of gear through there an pays no fees like you would do on ebay
I have set one up
Bob along collectables !SMARTY! It's called,,
And put some fair ground stuff on doubt it will sell
But what I want to know is
How does anyone find the stuff if they don't know you
Is there a load of stuff just put on every minute and you have to trawl through it
Am sure my items would never be found like that
Anyone know or advise me on wether there is a section for it
My mates gone all quiet since I told him am on it !PUNISH!

No Bob, there isn't a search facility on Facebook.
You will automatically see the pages of "your friends".
There are groups for items for sale/wanted in most geographical areas where people are trying to off load children's clothes and crappy sofas.
There also a couple of "Fairground" and "General Amusement" groups out there, but in my opinion they're no more than a handful of like minded collectors fishing in even smaller pools than we are on here.

I'm not convinced Facebook is the best vehicle for this.
Not while trying to get the word out there anyway.
Then again, perhaps if you were to get a lot of antiques/collectibles loaded onto a Facebook site and then advertise the site locally through Vivastreet.co.uk and similar sites.
However if there's not a lot to see when you get there people aren't likely to return are they?

Gumtree seems the way to go...not too fussy about what you are selling, fixed price, no commission.

At the moment.
However Gumtree have been known to suddenly start obeying the rules quicker than a boy scout at a sunday school outing. I guess it depends on how tightly their reins are being jerked by their lords and masters at Ebay.

My only concern with Facebook and groups is ensuring your security settings are strict as I would not want people opening having access. You could set-up up a pseudonym, but joining groups people may not allow you to join. Also setting up a new group would not get the viewing or audience. Unfortunately ebay still has the wider visibility and for what your selling of course does not contravene the policies.

By the way nice items, really fancy that 50's 4 seater, but have no space :#:
