Groetchen Mercury Deluxe 1940

Post by marivo10 »

Found this one in a Vintage shop in a small village in the Netherlands. It works great, pays out a cigarette token. Coin insert $1ct. Sadly its missing the coin slide and window on the back door. Love these small trade stimulators (better for my back) but its a pain in the ... to find one in the EU for a reasonable price. So if someone knows any stores in the EU or UK where they are selling please send me Pm.
Thanks..

Neat little machine marivo10. What was the little window on the back door used for?

The window was so the bartender/shopkeeper could check a new coin had been inserted when paying out a prize.

This Groetchen pays a cigarette token at a win, you can't fool the shop/bar keeper.
Most of the tokens have a number stamped in it so you can't cheat with them.
Correct me if I'm wrong...?

Well, you're correct, but after a token is dispensed, the winner has to take it to the shop/bar keep, and at that point the shop/bar keep will visually look at the coin in the window to make sure it's not a slug.

And some models of this machine took U.S. pennies up to a quarter, so the shop/bar keep would look into the window to see what coin was played, and multiply the win number on the token by the coin in the window.

So, if you played a nickel, and you got a "one" token," the payout would be five packs of cigarettes.

And a lot of the time, the shop/bar keep wouldn't actually pay out in cigarettes at all, but in cash. It was a way to claim "no gambling" when actually the player was gambling for money.
