jury service
A question for the Justice.
A manilla envelope appeared through the door today from HM Court Service.
After a day sweating, worrying about what possible finacial crisis this referred to I pucked up the courage and it turns out to be Jury Summons! Some relief on my part but as sole breadwinner and being self employed not a great way to spend x number of days.
Have any self employed here had experience of getting out of 'the service'?

If it's case #725 Regina v Clapham "Indecent Thoughts in a Pubic Place" talk the others round and there's a bag of old pennies in it for you.

9 months of of preparing for a further 19 years of financial hardship seems a bit much just to get out of jury serviceA doctors note telling them you are pregnant should work,

Re: jury service
Easy-peasy solution: Going to voire dire (jury selection), wear a sport jacket with leather patches on the elbows and start each answer to any question with: "Bloody hell..."
You'll be excused by the defense in the blink of an eye.

Re: jury service
I did Jury service a few years ago and actually quite enjoyed it. I wasn't however self employed though so the day rate didn't matter so much work paid the difference anyway.

Re: jury service
Take a folder of legal-looking papers with the words "CLIVE PONTING CASE"* in large friendly letters on the cover. Appear to be engrossed in it while you're waiting to be called, making sure the prosecutor can see the title. In the USA, even hinting that you've heard of "jury nullification" is enough to get you struck from the panel.
* You may remember that a jury found Mr Ponting not guilty of charges under the Official Secrets Act, in spite of the judge directing it to return a guilty verdict. They wouldn't want that happening again.
