I well remember playing with Swan Vesta matches, one trick we used to do was wrap the match head very tightly in silver foil then hold a flame under it. The match would then explode with a very loud 'BANG' and what a bang it was, sending the foil flying across the room!

Yes, I used to do battles with mates firing matches at each other. Good old days when at 7 you could buy matches and not give a stuff about health and safety....

The story of breaking heads into keys reminds me of the other mad thing I understand was tried at school - carefully putting broken Vesta heads into an oversized nut on a large old bolt and dropping from a height..... end result apparently was a large bang.... I was always paranoid as I heard people had lost hands trying to screw the nut on... !OMFG!

Yes, we were crazy back in the '60s, there was a lot of redevelopment in our town during that time and we used to play on the demolition sites after school. One incredibly stupid (but exciting) lark was to light a penny banger and wait until it fizzed then put it in an empty ketchup bottle, screw the lid on and run like f..k !! We had to wait until it fizzed because when we put it in the bottle just on the blue touch paper, it would go out ! :!:

Those of us who survived refer such memories as the 'good old days' hum......
