Cub Trade Stimulator Damper

Post by safetyman1005 »

Hi there I'm restoring a Cub Gum Ball trade stimulator.

As there is no damper to stop the reels slowly, I intend to make one.

My question is:- Does anyone know what type of piston is inside?
i.e. Solid or perforated to allow oil to flow slowly?

I've include a library photo of the part concerned.

Many Thanks Brian

Ive got a few stims but not an expert but are you sure it is an oil filled piston and not just air with a lubricated piston shaft? :!?!:

I have one (somewhere!!!) before I demolish the house looking for it .... the fact that: -
* It has a regulated air hole at the end.
* Is laying on its side.
* Was built down to simple design to keep it cheap.

In my mind all point to it being an air damper with a a leather capped piston.

If it was oil filled with a perforated piston you wouldn't need the air regulated hole. And if it was oil filled it would drip out of that hole, especially as it's horizontal.

You are right it an air damper with a leather piston the same as a bike pump, if you carefully pull of the end with the air adjustment (it is not threaded ) you can clean it.

Brian, Sorry gave the wrong information. you remove the other end, where the piston goes in. Do this very carefully as the pump is made of pot metal and is very brittle (it is a push on fit ) then soak the leather washer in light oil overnight this allows the washer to expand and make a tighter fit within the tube. Hope this helps. JRA.
