Weight & Fortune Scales removed from Mumbai stations

Just stumbled upon this piece in the Mumbai Mirror. Apparently the scales were introduced on railway platforms across the country in 1958.

While waiting for the train, I often made it a point to use these machines, with their colourful lights, not just to know the weight but also because of the daily fortune that were printed on the brown cards. In the 1980, we used to feed the machines 50 paise. This went up to Re 1 and then Rs 2, the only place in Mumbai where inflation did not seem to hit.

These machines were very amusing. They not only told us our weight and fortune but it was also a guessing game as we would try and guess which actor’s face would be printed on our card... The machines were a major attraction and a prominent feature of railway stations and were also very popular among children. These weighing machines were also popular as there were a lack of options to check your weight back in the day and people would rely on these machines
