Funny you should say that - I bought some walnuts today and my niece said she wanted to try using one to remove a scratch from a wooden door. I've never tried it, but I think the oil is supposed to fill and hide light scratches. http://www.wikihow.com/Fix-Scratches-in-Furniture

I've just tried this on a light wood table and it seems to work OK; the nut leaves an oily film in the scratch mark.
The only downside is that you can't eat the Walnut afterwards.

I saw something recently where a guy was making traditional copper cookie cutters and was polishing them in a vibrating tub of smashed up walnut shells.

Walnut shell is also used as a soft abrasive blast media in place of sand, for example. It gently polishes and deburrs, is biodegradable and produces dust which is safer to breath than silica.

Yep, I use walnut shell media in my vibrating tumbler for polishing some items.

When I was flying C-130s with the Navy back in the '70s, it was a standard maintenance procedure to feed walnut shells into the intake of the turbo-prop engines; the shells cleaned carbon off the turbine blades without damaging them. And done on the ground, BP, not by flying through the walnut grove.
