The machine is working now.
It had several levers jammed by old hard grease, a broken mains input socket and a broken fluro tombstone. Also many adjustments were needed.

The green button (so I discovered) is for: During a payout, if the hopper becomes empty before completion of a pay, the hopper will keep running in an attempt to pick up coins for maybe 20 secs., then the machine powers off. The player will then call an attendant to get the remainder of their pay. The attendant will open the machine, fill the hopper then press the green button which restarts the machine and the hopper continues the payout.

Ha ha yeah funny about that.
What helped me were things that happened by accident but I took notice. Just needed the right clues and they jumped out in front of me. Pretty lucky this time.
