New Colron wood dye and Nitromors formulas

Post by widget2k4 »

Does anyone who uses Colron wood dye notice the new refined one that's taken over the original discontinued one is pretty rubbish? I've used it a couple of times and it's nowhere near the quality or colour of the original stuff :(

Any recommendations for a good alternative?

Ah yes indeed... I managed to buy all the stock my local old style hardware shop had about 6 months ago. I think it's likely to be EU law similar to the paintstripper change a couple of years back?

I know what you mean mate, the new Nitromors is a waste of time, better results with water.

I have used Liberon spirit dye and found it to be good - it is still available.

The Nitromors thing really surprised me. I've just stripped down a large piece of oak furniture and used Nitromors for the first time in ages and it was useless; it didn't blister the old varnish at all. Asked my son in law who is a specialist painter and he said it's not so much the Nitromors as the varnish you're trying to remove. The newer the varnish the less the Nitromors will work due to the ingredients of modern varnishes and paints.

I just used the last of my good Nitromors a few weeks ago and that stuff will remove anything, including your skin (by Christ it burns if it gets on you). The new stuff won't remove anything and I mean anything. I used about 2 litres of the stuff trying to strip a Mills Hightop and it did nothing at all, even on your skin it doesn't burn or anything like the last stuff did. It's like automotive paint - now it's all water-based crap that doesn't go hard, not like the good old stuff used to.

Yes, old Nitromors was very good at doing the job but EU law finally caught up with the manufacturers and that old make up was banned for purchase direct by the public so new Nitromors formula was introduced and other brands and it was even introduced as double strength in a smaller container but at a higher price but will only perform a tiny amount of the jobs the old formula achieves.

I know some people and possibly others here on the forum who get aircraft grade paint stripper? The guy that gets my stripper just has to put his business details and the supplier just asks him to sign a disclaimer that it's not for public use or in home use and that the employees using this have completed the industrial training certification for its use. The number of people that have asked me the same question as to how I strip paint off as Nitromors doesn't work...

If you contact the Nitromors customer services tech team they don't want to talk about it but if you stay on the line long enough they eventually tell you the truth about how less effective it is in general usage in comparison to the old, however it's the same for all suppliers to the retail stores as its simply banned and gone for good at retail.

I presume it's same for this too but it may be something different of course. I was just happy to find a case locally that will do me for a long time as doing a lot less
machines these days anyway.

Hello all,
I found a good replacement for Nitromors called Starchem Synstryp. Works well if not better than Nitromors.
It is expensive at £26.46 for 5 Ltrs but it works. Just Google - it is available from quite a few suppliers.

Additional to Liberon spirit wood dye which 13Rebel mentioned, Rustins also do a range of eleven shades. Being spirit based, they dry quite fast. I've not bought any for years, so don't know if they've changed. Generally I prefer the water based dyes.

Although the old varnish strippers were effective, I really don't like breathing in those fumes and however gloved-up you are, it gets on your skin. I keep meaning to give Soda blasting a blast...

Star Chem Synstrip makes Nitromors seem like moisturiser....
This was a post on a car hobby forum about paintstrippers. I am presuming it is related to the new formula Nitromors.

I invested in the soda blasting gear and have used it once on my NovaMat. It worked well in that it removed the old paint and left the metal perfect for spraying. It does tend to block easily, though, so be prepared to spend a bit of time clearing blockages. Also, I used it in my garden one warm, still, day and a large area of lawn was killed by the soda deposited on it. My better half was not thrilled (the NovaMat painted up nicely, though). I will buy a blasting box before using it again......

Paramose is the best stripper out there now
It's a mate of mine selling it on ebay ,don't know how much tho
He sells tons of it every week to the antiques trade
It's very thin and spreads great
Again it burns the hands of you if you splash
He has been selling it years at the fairs for £20 a tin
And the same people keep coming back for more
So it must be good , my wife stripped our garage door with it
It was enamelled paint
I also think he has a website
If he has I'll put it on here

Online via the trade suppliers there is just an auto check box to tick, it's just to protect the supplier so they can show the authorities they have written confirmation from the buyer that all is in order as a trade sale and not for home use etc.
As it's now not stocked at pukka retail outlets the general public don't have normal access to these type of products.
