Re: Hoopers screen stars help
I will try my best.
The main reason why the coins were going the wrong way was the flap in the chute was sticking so, once that was oiled and moving freely, that was it sorted.
How it works is very ingenious because it is all predetermined. It knows when it's going to land on a win, so therefore knows how many pennies are in the payout chute, and it's spot on every time.
The only downside to this system I suppose is it wouldn't take someone long to work out when it was going to pay out and how much.

Oh, that's interesting. So the reel isn't free-wheeling but somehow driven to a predetermined position.
Re: Hoopers screen stars help
Yes that's right. It's locked into position with another cog that drives the wheel. It's very clever how they did it, nothing like I've seen before.

It's sad to learn that even the future is predetermined.
Makes you kind of think there's no need to have ambition ....
Still everyone has their DAY
If anyone is interested in owning a future payout machine, there is one in The Coventry Auction this Sunday.

Seems you have got yourself sorted now!
I only have this front shot of the one I had.

Glad you worked it out widget as it is horrible to buy a machine from auction and feel you got a wrongun.
I was tempted with this myself, something about that had an appeal, it was simple in design but attractive,. Only seen one before.

Cheers tom,
I loved it as soon as I seen it and knew it had potential to sit on one of my stands.
Was gutted when it wasn't working right. I have to say, I do like the example above in red as well.

Yes it does for a cash box... Also yours looks like original paint - even more appeal to me. Looked good. Think the red one above looks to have been repainted...
Re: Hoopers screen stars help
Mine wasn't in original paint. It had been painted over. The colour underneath was a dark blue.
Re: Hoopers screen stars help
There you go, shows what I know... Did not look recent paint though... Still looked good.

Re: Hoopers screen stars help
The red one pictured I only had for a very short time. I didn't repaint it and cannot remember if paint was original or not, so not much help. I only ever had that one too. Not a machine you see too often really either in person or on the net for that matter.
Boland Black Beauty, Screen Stars, Brooklands, White City...

Just happened to be watching the 1972 Woody Allen film "Play it again, Sam". His character is a film reviewer who is also obsessed with classic black and white films, especially those of Humphrey Bogart. So his SF apartment is filled with old movie posters - and a Boland Screen Stars single reel slot! This seems to be almost the same as the machine pictured below but with added round cabinet sides and a longer cabinet, maybe an added lower cashdoor? And such a unique machine would be easy to spot today, though I bet currently sitting in the US somewhere anonymously? With a release date of 4 May 1972 the principal photography must have been in 1971. And of course this was just when Britain went decimal so I'm sure that lead to so many UK machines being exported from that point onwards.
These stills are at the 23 minute mark.
I now see the almost same machine was pictured earlier in this correct Hoopers post by Aristomatic, though without the fully curving wood sides.

Re: Hoopers screen stars
Nice find, I keep meaning to show movies and programs I see with machines in as it is regular. This is a Hoopers machine, not Bolands of course.
Re: Hoopers screen stars
Haha, not an of course to me as I know very little about these machines. Thanks Tree. I guess needs to be moved to a relevant thread then mods please? * Done - Site Admin.
