Interesting Buckley setup

Post by aristomatic »

Seen plenty of Jennings Bingo models.
Did Marmatic just use a Jennings set-up and create a Buckley option?

This machine was sold by a friend in the US so I asked him about it. It came from the Barry Goldfarb collection before he had it. He's thinning out his machines, selling ones he doesn't plan to restore which is why it was on ebay. It sold very quickly he tells me. I've asked him who Marmatic were but he's not got back to me yet. It seems to be all Buckley though. An amazing number of payouts, 22 including 4 jackpot lines plus a win of 20 for "bingo" any where in the window, which, I think, totals 40 different payouts. The payout discs must be a mass of holes!

My memory is poor but I'm sure I've had a couple if machines with a Marmatic badge on them but I cannot find a picture of one now I search....and not on the site either...? Seems strange, could have sworn we had discussed this name as an English operator previously but it seems not, so must be mistaken.

You need to search Mar Matic as two words - they had a hyphen in their name. Yes, the recent Horse Head Hi Top I shared came from them. They were primarily a London based outfit in Hatton Garden, but also had a facility in Brighton. They were exclusive dealers for some machines and obviously did some modifications for some imported refurbished machines from the States to U.K. coinage. Were big into Ballys...

I'm waiting for a flyer from the time for a bit more evidence but it would seem Marmatic were a Maryland distributor and refurb company that supplied Maryland well after the Jonson Act closed most states down, then when the work got too small in the USA they moved to the UK. This Buckley is not thought to have ever left the US so one of theirs from before there UK stint? :!?!:

A little digging on the web produced this from the Nevada state journal(1963), so it would seem Mar-Matic had a branch in the UK but was,and in fact still seems to be, a Maryland company. So it would be possible to find both US and UK machines with their name on.

CASTLE TO GET SLOTS-
The plush castle, Mono Hotel, in Douglas, Isle of Man, Britain, is to have slot machines as a result of a recent visit of Isle of Man's officials to the Nevada Gaming Control headquarters and to casinos in Reno and Las Vegas, it was announced by Arnold Gibbs, Reno sales manager for Mar-Matic Sales, Inc. The company's London branch will supply the machines, he said.

Thx for that PC,

However, there's a part of me that hoped it was a small Margate based operator with tall wooden double doors lock up with small access door through to a dank workshop and office with machines and parts strewn around the floor and on rickety wooden racking, with an old Ford Thames 300e van with Mar-Matic, suppliers of all coin operated machines tel Margate 392 now barely legible as successive summer's have faded the paintwork.......

As soon as tf gave their address as Hatton Garden that idea went out the window  their previous address was Berklely sq, just across the road from the us embassy :o ,still their workshop was in Brighton so knowing Brighton id imagine it was under a railway arch or similar
