Newbie seeks Jubilee Riviera help

Post by brammyd »

Hello all. I'm new to the forum, but have been mildly addicted to renovating a 1980 Bally frontier pinball. I've just bought a Jubilee Riviera slot machine and I love it! It plays well, is set for 10p play and pays out as it should. It's not keen on new 10p's because of the thickness. I've just put new bulbs in it too, but my question is this:

It did have a mechanism which allowed two games for 10p but someone removed it for the last owner, and the guy who did it has now passed away. :(
I do have all the pieces that were removed. Does anyone have a diagram or advice on re installing them please?

Also is there anyone in the U.K. that stocks reel strips for this machine? It has O and X, Bar and a gold/black star.

Many Thanks DarrenB

I take it the double coin drop is mechanical, not electric?
Once we know that we can move forward.
2 play is not popular on collector machines.
I can make the reel strips if no one else can help. But I'm away till 24th Nov.

Hi there, yes it's all mechanical...I dont mind keeping the single drop, but one of the plates on the front says 2 games for 10p ( Unless I could get a replacement plate)...as for the reel strips I would be very keen on those being replaced. I have added pictures

Coin entry.png

Am I the only one who can only see just a single coin detector on this machine? :o
I'm wondering if this is an example of any old mech being shoved back into any old case?

I do have the pieces that were removed...I just don't know where they go... two screws, a spring, a cam of some sort and a rod about an inch long which has a bolt through it... Will post a photo when I get a moment.

The parts you mention make sense for a double drop but not, I think, on that coin mech as you would need two positions for the coin probe so the coin can fall in front of a probe twice as it drops through. If it was me, I'd change the denominator to 10p for one play (I can make that for you) and I'd definitely leave the reel strips as they are. They look fine and original.

Are the reel strips original?
I've always associated these 'noughts and crosses' reels with rebuilds.
As far back as I can remember, the only original symbols were fruits or numbers, with the occasional deck of cards on Australian 'pokies'.

The name of the revamper is written on the front. Henry Powell, probably did thousands of these. Pokies are Australian or ones with cards. Never seen one of these in the UK with cards.

Machines have been revamped for years. I reckon 80% of Jennings Governors were revamped.

Just because it has fruits does not mean it has not been revamped. So many machines in their time have.... Question is how many machines exist that are original as they left the factory? I should think the % is tiny.

Picture shows original 10p single coin play marquee plastic.
Also shows an earlier different artwork marquee set PA used.

Thanks for all your help and advice... As I said, I am new to this type of machine, but willing to learn. It has a UK plate on the left hand side, so perhaps it was under licence from the Aussies (or just altered for the UK market). As all the plates on the front are pertinent to the reels and are probably a plastic rather than the glass translight across the top, perhaps that was all done at a later stage. The offer of a decal that says 1 play for 10p would be most welcome.
Let me know!
Thanks DarrenB
Pic of coin drop parts below if anyone is interested!

PM sent.

Yes original fruit reelstrips Rivieras had glass sets to the left and right of the reel glass window. However, as these sat in front of solid metal panels they were generally not illuminated.

I presume as this was the case when these were revamped to OXO format the revamper chose the budget plastic option rather than glass? As TF states the revamper had the option to incorporate their trademark name or logo and address and contact details e.g. Henry Powell (or PA for Powell's Automatics) and refreshed over time and when telephone codes changed.

If this machine was originally on two pulls for 10p, converting it to one pull for 10p will surely have the effect of halving the payout percentage. From around 80% to 40% making it an unattractive machine to play?

I'm so glad somebody has raised this, I haven't had the cojones to mention it.
The last time I said something about % on here I was justifiably ridiculed and made fully aware why I was never a Rocket Surgeon.

On a lot of machines you would be dead right but on this particular machine not so much. The payout % is of course cut in half but as there are few winning combos and they are high payouts at 5, 10, and 30, rather than the usual single pull payouts starting at 2 and ending at 10 + jackpot, the game would retain its interest. On a site, earning money, not so much but in a collection I think the change is minimal.

Is there any reason why '2 plays for...' ISN'T popular on collectors machines?

I'll let coppinpr come back to you on x2 pulls regarding collector machines,

However as a tiny kid wandering around the arcades those x2 pulls per coin
machines were a goldmine....!

Guys would walk away from a machine with the second pull unused, giving me
a free go. These x2 pull Rivieras were better as so many punters would place an
additional coin before x2nd pull not realising it was x2 pulls per coin, the unused
coin resting in coin return slot, which most punters never even realised existed..
