Broken Mills escalator advance bar

Post by highfield »

The advance bar on my Mills 5 cent escalator has sheared in half.

I am hoping there is a member on the forum who could help me by welding it back into one piece for me. Failing that, any advice as to where I could get it done would be appreciated.

I just need it welding as I am OK with filing it back flat etc.
Thanks
John

That bar is a pressed steel so nothing exotic. Anybody with a basic welder will be able to repair that, like a local car repair shop etc. Though obviously needs to be well clamped so it's dead straight first. Might sound silly but I've had to restore a bunch of parts over the years that while often nicely welded were not perfectly straight first!! !!RANT!! !PUNISH! :dammit:

One wonders how it was broken in the first place?

Was thinking the same, but a few things come to mid, it is a natural weak area where the slot is cut out. Could also be the wrong spring used and maybe lack of rubber damper to slam into.....

Could be I have a rubber damper missing. I made the machine out of all scrap parts bought individually so I could have missed a critical item in the build.

Thanks bp and treefrog for your suggestions. I have just taken a look at the buffer on the escalator and it’s almost none existent. It’s not something I had looked at before so thanks.
