I have a German electro-mech wall machine that a previous owner had described as temperamental.
Sometimes it would fire up and play, others it would just sit and sulk. I've checked all fuses including internal in line ones.
A close squint showed up powdered debris splattered up the inside of the case in line with the end of this capacitor.


I haven't tested it yet, but hoping that I'm on the right track I'm asking if anyone could identify a modern equivalent?
I've tried searching on supplier sites but nobody recognises the spec.

Are there three leads coming out of it? Looks like it could be a suppressor....

Edit: in which case, either replace it or cut it out.

That is the weirdest thing I have seen for a long time. It seems to be 3 capacitors, one 0.1 micro Farad and 2 x 2500 pico Farad. The notation SW on the right does suggest that it is designed to go across a mains voltage switch as a suppressor, as JC suggests. But suppressors are usually just a capacitor and resistor in series as shown in the attached.
Can you rotate it a bit so I can see the circuits diagram fully?
Again as JC says, you could just cut it out but then the switch is more likely to arc which will eventually damage its contacts.

I half expected to see Brocks Fireworks written on the side. However having a closer "scrute" at it I was disappointed in myself to realise I hadn't noticed before that although there is one connection on the left there are two on the right and the bottom of those two (b in a circle) is just waving lazily in the wind, attached to naff 'all. My suspicious mind hints that this must surely be a an undesirable state of circumstances.

It's a suppressor.

Well done JC, that seems to solve it. I have never seen that 'shorthand' for a suppressor before and I imagine it really looks like the attached picture.

Thank you chaps, I'll find a three phase supply and stand in a bucket of water to give it a try.

Knowing me as well as you do JC, nobody else has a deeper insight into my problems than you. No surprise that I've given up on solutions to many of them.

We wouldn't want it any other way, BP. But steer away from buckets of water and 3 phase electrickery.

Completely agree, I think a bucket of mercury would work far better
