New Forum Icons

Post by arrgee »

Site Admin, Just wondered what the circular icons are, next to the topic titles and what do they mean ?

Some have red asterisk in top right, others have blue arrow in top left, some have blue text representations, some red and some have padlocks in, oh... and one with an exclamation mark in. :???:

All a bit of a mystery if you ask me.

Two general points
- Red icons are unread items, blue/grey are read
- A star on any topic means you have posted in it
- A scrolling icon means that the post is popular

Image - Announcement
Image - Sticky topic

It looks a bit daunting to me too. There are many default bells and whistles we really don't need and I think they just confuse us simple steam-age folk. I'm in the process of streamlining and restyling, but it will take a while.

Meaning of circular topic icons

Post by andydotp »

Topic merged - Site Admin.

Q:
Someone recently asked me whether I knew the answer to this question:
What? when I plunge head-first into 'view new posts' in order to remain up to speed with current events does the left-hand column of circles with ll inside mean please?
Some appear to have a + top LH quadrant and others don't and others are going around & around clock-wise........ !PUZZLED!
I simply waved them away and dismissed their buffonic tendencies - without explaining of course, but perhaps for their benefit someone could provide the answer.
Thanks,,,, (on their behalf).

As a relative newbie, I hadn't actually found this "view new posts" link and was just trawling through topics looking for latest dates in r/h column.

The 11 is actually like the pause button on a media player and if you look at the l/h buttons on subjects you haven't looked at they will display a forward arrowhead like "play" on media players, thus the "paused" means you have looked at them.

Almost certainly something to do with cookies (but not the kind you have with milk.)

Tell your "friend" there is no such thing as a stupid question - only things you know the answer to and those you don't.

For the computer illegitimate among us ..........

..... the number that appears in those circles (currently eleven) is the number of members who post anything on a regular basis. ;-)

I'm not sure the joke blocking button is working yet.

For the curious:
A few samples... You don't need to know all this!

I'm requesting a special button that means: "I can't stop posting despite the fact I know nothing about the subject." :didact:

Reference is made to the active topics page............
In the far left column, some posts have lighted revolving circles.

Please explain what this means. ROGER

Hi Roger,
I've moved and merged your query with a reply I posted in 2013. It contains a full posting icons key.

The Active topics link (just underneath the clock face, top left of screen) takes you to the most recent posts.
