Warning:
As in USA, State legislation relating to ownership of coin-operated machines varies so lets be mindful that we don't get ourselves in any strife.

Hence I have a permit to own my 21 machines as I reside in Victoria yet the pertinent conditions attached state that the machines Must Not be used for gambling purposes (Durr), Must Not be playable with Australian coinage (or notes - Durr again) and Cannot Be Displayed - even in a locked glass cabinet as a conversation piece in say, a theme pub, cafe or whatever! Yet in a pub in the centre of Canberra, ACT there's a nice little 50s Shelley Black Cherry re-vamp sitting there right next to the gents bogs and a mate in NSW has (had) about fourteen Aussie re-vamp half & hightops mostly on shilling & sixpence.
Mind you, there is Sharp's' wall machine tourist arcade in Echuca where you buy old pennies and play the machines! Is that not gambling? !PUZZLED!
Other than one friend who has a remarkable collection of true antiquities and another who has a garage stacked full of old bandits, I think there's pretty much only myself who collects the old beauties.
So come on Aussies - Melburnites in particular - show us what you're hiding - even if by PM.
Cheers, :byee:
Andy.

Australian Wineasies & showman's paint

Topic merged - site admin.

I'm just reading John Peterson's latest article in Mechanical Memories Magazine which has reached me here in Oz, and I have one theory as to why these scrolls and flourishes are so remarkably similar. They have also appeared in wall machines here in Australia that were originally made here (eg Wineasies which are the local equivalent of an Allwin).
I believe that these were painted by signwriters who specialised in decorating trucks and other transport vehicles. Here in Australia it is still the practisce for buyers of brand new semitrailers to spend a lot of money to decorate the prime movers of these vehicles with these same traditional scrolls, fleur de lis and a lot of pinstriping. Whilst this handpainted decoration costs a lot of money in these days where most of a signwriters work is stick on plastic that is computer generated, the cost is insignificant compared to the hundreds of thousands of dollars that these trucks cost. I think that these same signwriters were used to decorate the coin op machines and other attractions of showmen.

Damn you Captain Scarlet and all your followers! You found the little beauty that I had surreptitiously esconded (making up words now!) into the all pervading ether.

Not sure why that happened, it worked fine before I sent it.

Andy, there are actually quite a lot of coin-op collectors in Aust with early slots, you'd be surprised. And I'm sure quite a few I don't know about. There just isn't an easy way to find many of them except for word of mouth amongst other collectors.

Well given it can take days to get from one town to the next this would explain the lack of communication or interaction. Imagine the conversation about the best location for an Ausie slot auction,,,,,, Perth or Adelaide, but that is a 47hour drive from Sidney....

Cheers,
More great social banter.. :D
Another problem for folks being secretive in Oz are the arcane laws in some States..
'Victoria-the Nanny State'

Gameswhat, I don't doubt that for a moment.
There must be heaps of machines tucked away on the QT our here..

Here's some "Wineasies" that I used to own. None with Showmen's pain I'm afraid. The ones called Wineasy are I think renamed English Allwins. One is an electric payout, another is an automatic payout. I can't show mechanism as I no longer have them and did not take a photo of this.

Bob, what about a few pics of the Aussie versions with the cast face, SS LUNA I think? I found the registered design for them. Very cool for a non British Allwin/Wineasy.

Anyone in Oz got a Bryans Payramid?? or interesting Allwin (preferably ciggie payout) and want to sell or trade for a bandit coz I'm a-lookin'.
Jingle found a Bullion in a shop nr Mt. Eliza when he was living here and I found a Ruffler & Walker 24 cup in a Geelong antique store.
Speaking of Geelong - when I migrated here in '93 they had a flippin' topless hardware store there.... (Sundays 6pm 'til closing time) dozens of 'handy-men' traipsing the isles pushing empty trolleys,,, 'er,, bag 'o nails please luv'.....Hilarious..
but somewhat off topic. Apols.

Do want another Payramid though..

I haven't got these on the computer. I'd have to go through thousands of photos to find them. When I get some time I'll dig them out and put them on here.

Thanks for pics Bob, very similar to English allwins. Would they have been manufactured in Australia (do you have a makers name? It all helps towards the history) or perhaps they are English and the paperwork changed.

From what I can see from the pics, the coin payout on a couple of those machines look decidedly BMco to me.

None of these machines have any manufacturers, distributers or operators names on them. I have always thought that numbers 1, 4, 5 and 6 are English machines (Allwins) with the paperwork changed and 1, 4 and 5 being rehoused in new cabinets. I think that number 2 with the automatic payout is probably Australian with the payout trim piece possibly coming from another machine. I have seen two other examples of this machine. I believe that number 3, the electric coin payout, is Australian. I have thought that number 7 may be Australian.
I wasn't making any claims about these machines being Australian, merely that I found them here in Australia and as they have been in my collection I had them ready to hand on my computer. When I get the chance I will go through my photos, scan them and show the machines that Rory mentions that he found the Australian design patents for.

Well I've finally gone through my many thousands of photos of coin ops and here are machines that I THINK are Australian made. Some I'm sure are Australian made and I'll label those. Few have any markings, only one, the Skillmaster, has a manufacturers name on it. Some Rory has found the design patents for. I'll do another posting with machines I've come across in Australia, but not seen elsewhere which MAY be Australian but I just don't know. I'd be keen to see if anybody has come across any of these out of Australia.
