Old penny slot machines are back on Southport pier

Post by alan57 »

Today I decided to battle the strong Irish sea gales and walk around Southport and to the end of the pier. Since Clive Baker left Southport there has been nothing really at the end of the pier. But now I can report the old penny slots are back at the end of the pier. The new set up isn't as big as Clive had it - there's about 20 allwins (reproductions), a number of bandits and some roll the penny machines. Nearly all working on the old penny. I know it's half term week, but the place was full of kids, mums and dads and grandparents all spending money - there was even a queue at the change machine. After reading Jerry's article in this month's MMM about old slot machines, I am pleased to say that, at least at the time I was there, the old penny slots was doing a roaring trade.

I'm not sure, I think it's being run by Sefton Council.

From the website .........

Concessionaires Colin Poole and Colin Jamieson, who are taking over the museum's site in the Pier Pavilion, are now hoping to maintain a collection of old penny slot machines in the resort and are already working to build up their own collection so that they can open it for business on June 2.

Mr Poole told the Champion: ”It is going to take us a long time to get it to his Mr Baker's standard. We're fairly confident that by the season proper we will be up and running with a high quality penny arcade though, we're committed to do so.“

I see Clive's website is now online at http://www.penny-game.com
Amongst other things, it lists the various locations of his vintage machines, including the Milestones site:

I'll put it in the Archive.
