Unfortunately for us mortals, Gameswat, we are without your talents and cannot build a mechanism from scratch. Unusual as the shell might be, it would only be good for a New Years' eve party hat.

I'd sooner have a part of something special....rather than nothing at all JP! On my measly income I have to make do with the crumbs that the millionaire collectors miss or don't care for. In fact I have a house full of interesting "things", many Frankensteined together from parts, and not that many are used for what they were originally intended. The 19th Century French figural zinc shop signs look identical to the hen becuase they were made by the same artisans. And they usually sell for thousands, now considered highly desirable folk art.John T. We're kindred spirits Gameswat!
This thread wouldn't be complete without mention of two other chocolate egg laying metal birds - the goose and the stork:

The postcard lends support to that theory.Gameswat wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2014 8:22 am The style of that base immediately makes me think of BAC. And since they were the major vending operators in the UK at that time my feeling is this machine was probably copied from the Hartwig and Vogel machines by them under licence. Just as I believe they did with the Roovers Metal Stampers.
