R&W's first owned workshop

American, British, French or German? We want to know about it.

R&W's first owned workshop

Post by badpenny »

By 1938, they had even made and marketed two of their own wall machines. In 1939, they moved their headquarters from the cafe premises in Lavender Hill, and opened up as Ruffler and Walker at No. 37 St. John's Hill in Clapham.

We should pioneer a blue plaque campaign, perhaps fashioned as an old penny to adorn these places.

Thanks for the detective work, BP. I always imagine these early premises as stand-alone buildings, akin to small factories. Interesting to see how wrong I am.

I like your idea of commemorating the storied past of British coin operation in some fashion.

My dad had friends among the owners, suppliers and associated firms linked to R&W in the late '40s and '50s. I remember meeting some of them in the '50s - the original spivs would be my description, perhaps fair to call them the original "Lavender Hill mob."
