Video of laughing sailor looks good
But you can't advertise this as 1950s
It's probably 1990s model in a 1930s French crane case :o
Post a picture of the mechanism
And it will be confirmed

Laughing Sailor looked bloody terrible to me! Hardly any action, and the same movements repeated which is wrong, and no eye rolling! :burp:

As a buyer I just do the sums beforehand or during and figure what I'm willing to pay (bid + premium), so what?

Of course, we all do that! That doesn't mean the difference between a commission of 5% and 20% doesn't matter. What it does on the plus side is stop people buying simply to resell, as they almost always can't overcome the inflated price. On the other hand, there are unlikely to be any bargains as an item that sells at a low price will almost always cost you the going rate with the commission.

Why do auction houses always come up with these useless "expected to make" figures? Take a look at this one's previous auctions and compare the estimate against the realized amount. The only thing these amounts do is make you think they don't know the value of anything. Half of these items will have a reserve of double the "estimate".

So if I can make sense of this Coppin, you're trying to say that from the day Premiums were introduced, suddenly auction prices on every object sold went up and have stayed up ever since?!? If we all add the premium onto our bids as you say, then it wouldn't make any difference. At the best of times auction prices don't make a lot of sense anyway. They certainly don't dictate how I sell machines in the real (non-auction) world. Antiques by their nature are all unique so there really isn't any such thing as price shopping for them, though a lot of people think you can.

Wondered when this would be posted on the site, even though most of us already knew about this. What is even more interesting that the seller, or seller on behalf of the seller, has bypassed the moderators' rules. Maybe we need to register ourselves as auctioneers to get around the rules. Would be more interesting if Steve Hunt advertises his auction on here as well !SOFA!

Anyway, looks an interesting lot, given the recent other working models discussed on here, shame most of the machines have been converted to modern coin mechanisms. I wonder if the originals are hidden somewhere inside.

I see now that the rule as it stands is ambiguous: Please do not use the Forum to advertise items "Wanted" or "For Sale". Such postings will be deleted. If you wish to sell items on this site, please post them in the Auction or Market.

The intent of the rule is to ban direct trading through the Forum. It is not in any way designed to discourage people from using the Forum to advertise sales taking place either here, in the Market/Auction, or elsewhere - be it ebay, the Elephant House or any other venue.

I will have to re-word the rule to dispel this confusion.

So if I can make sense of this Coppin,
No Game, your not making sense of what I mean to say,
its just a personal thing, I would rather pay a guy £1500 than the same guy £1100 plus £400 to an auction house
you're trying to say that from the day Premiums were introduced, suddenly auction prices on every object sold went up and have stayed up ever since?!?
not that its relevant, because I did not say that at all,and its only a "paper" amount, but by its very nature every payment for an item bought at auction HAS gone up by the % of the commission,
ie hammer price £500 no commission buyer pays £500 hammer price £500 and 20% commission buyer pays £600, but in reality this dose not happen because as we have said the buyer bids lower to allow for the commission.
the real looser is ,as we have said, the seller because hes paying a sellers commission to the house + the hammer price is lower because of the reasons mentioned above. This can really hurt, if a seller knows the item is selling privately for £1500 he is likely to get only £1200 at auction because of the added cost to the buyer, he then pays perhaps 10% to the house and goes home with only £1080
As I say,its just a personal thing, thats why auction prices never make any sense ,because we dont all view them the same way.

Sorry but I still stand by my original post, "20%!!!! daylight robbery..... :( " I know that the auction house has to make something out of a sale, but to me 20% is just greedy, and another example of why this country is in such a mess right now. /\UK/\

I know I'm prejudiced but 20% does appear excessive compared to Coventry's 6%.

.......and lets not forget, it's not just the buyer's who pay only 6%, we also only charge vendors 6%.
I know I'm prejudiced but.....
So am I, but as BP and I have always said, we run the Coventry auctions for the good of the hobby, whereas the auction house in question (and all others) do what they do purely for commercial profit.
Unfortunately, as Paul says, with excessive commissions, ultimately it's the seller that loses.

Another good example,

A machine has just sold at an auction house in Sheffield. A nice looking Hi Top but missing the back door and probably still needs some work/parts. Sold for £340. which plus the 22% fee's works out at £415. A back door is usually around the £50 mark so it becomes a £500 machine and thats assuming its someone local who didnt have to pay 50-80 in delivery as well.!

Just looked up the sellers commission at Astons, once again I quote "You will find our commission charge is very low at just 17%+VAT"
would this mean that if the crane sold for £1500 the buyer would pay £1876, the seller would get £1298 and the house would get £578 !!! ??

Well OP said "We've just changed our buyer's premium for online bidders to 20%. We're just in the process of updating our website." so although the website says 17%+VAT for sellers' I'd guess there's every chance they haven't changed that either.
