Annual Slot Machine Bun-Fight

Post by pennymachines »

Numbers seemed a bit down at the Cambridge auction last Sunday (27/11/04), but then the hall was bigger than usual. In fact the venue was a pleasant improvement on previous years - more spacious, well lit and warm. Nowhere much to sit though.

Bit of a rag-bag of machines with plenty of "projects" and just a few top class machines. The Dennison working models were the highlight, and the top of these was the "Iron Maiden", a truly macabre scene of torture and grande guignol. It was a second generation Dennison - ie. revamped from an earlier clockwork model into its present incarnation as an electric machine by John Dennison's daughters. As such, it was in remarkably good original condition and working order. Was it the price or the unsavoury subject matter that persuaded me not to buy it?

Prices on Bryans machines were high as usual - notably the Tick Tock and Magic Machines. Otherwise I'd say prices were largely unspectacular - perhaps reflecting the smaller turnout and generally poorer quality of goods on sale. Two bargains of the day were the Polyphon and Symphonium. They were in the wrong saleroom - or the right one, if you were the buyer. It's not often you can get a fully working Polyphon for under a grand.

Anyone else got some opinions or noted some prices at this sale?

I was the under-bidder on both the 'Tick Tock' and the 'Disappearing Disc'. Had the 160 mile drive home empty handed in the end :blub:

Wished afterwards I had gone higher on the TT but the painted cabinet and rough chrome on the DD was a big downer. I thought the Worlborl was expensive at £950 as well considering its condition.

Oh well... the search continues!

Hi Keith,
Here is a photo of the Tick-Tock at the auction.I'll post the Disappearing Disc next.
At least it was a good day out and think of the money you saved.

Are you sure that 'Tinny' (Mutoscope) went for £900, Pete? I didn't write it down but am fairly sure it was £500. Correct me if I'm wrong but £900 sounds a heck of a lot...

Hi Keith,
I have it written down as £900. Maybe someone else could confirm the price it went for.

Seems a lot. I put one in last year fully working, complete, it only made £750.

Firstly good luck to this promising new site. Well done to all involved.
Can anyone tell me what the other magic machine went for?
Thank you.

Hi Bookie, I think the Disappearing Disk was £1500 or £1550. Cheaper than the String Cutter but poorer quality.

Hi Yorkshire Pudding, thanks for that, pity I couldn't attend. Makes one wonder what the case was like before its paint job.
