Cadillac Mills

Post by treefrog »

Noticed this at auction today and was initially excited, but then realised it was probably full of electric wizardry with a modern electronic mech in it....could be wrong !PUZZLED!

Never met a reserve.

Pretty sure we've had a few threads on this Mills style cabinet. I think these have had a number of popular names so I'm not sure which it is, maybe the original Mills style name for one.

Compact and M come to mind. The majority tend to come sat atop a stand of some description and some with tray as a table top. Some with jackpots/escalators, some not. My money is on all mechanical. I like these as a tabletop.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly with additional pictures from the auctioneer to show otherwise.........................

What did it not go for?

Bell-o-Matic "compact" 1962, I believe. The JP tower would hint it's all mechanical, yes?

I guess my main suspicion was the reels, they do not look right. They look like those more modern type used in electronic mechs. Who knows....but also there are no lower awards.

Well of course until we see inside we cannot confirm either way. However, the absence of lower awards may just mean it's a jackpots only machine? Maybe that's why the reel bundle looks odd as the absence of lower award symbols means there are lots of blank no award/no symbol on a white background...?

There are lower awards, on the flat plate in front of the reel window, as in the other photos. You can just see them.

PC when there are lower awards with standard reel bundle that's where the usual
cherries orange plums bells lower award pays are sited.

I can't see from my tiny tablet from TF pictures, but the reel bundle is certainly jackpots
only as there are so many blank no symbol (white areas) on the strips.

TF's post alludes to Cadillac, so maybe there a big Cadillac plastic light up strip. Or maybe the casino name in that area on this jackpot only machine?

Yes, I know that, and I thought I could see them there, but I was wrong. What it actually says on the flat plate when I blew it up larger is "Cadillac Special". The top jackpot is 4 Cadillac car symbols in a row.

Just out of interest... this is what it looks like without the auction sticker

Now then regardless of mechanical or electromechanical does the award card say you won a Cadillac for x4 cars...!

Well yes it does! It is an American machine after all, running on 25c. When I first started
to go to Las Vegas in the early '70s, this was a common sort of prize. Each bank of machines would have a different jackpot, often with the prize hanging above the bank of machines. I've seen cars, motorbikes, boats, the weirdest one I ever saw was a helicopter. There it was for all to see, hanging above a bank of 20 machines at the Dunes casino. This machine shows each payout and its amount clearly plus the 4 cars which says "Cadillac" in the payout space. :o

I never got around to asking the auction house for pictures inside, but if a genuine 4 reeler would have been interested. I just had a hunch on this one, especially as the reel strips seem to be wide with no borders like on tin reels. Electro reels are plastic stuck strips...... so I never took the risk of buying a bunch of chips and wires....

Suspect this was a later casino modded machine as Paul says for Vegas type customers, even the custom stand and payout trays. With the size of it, there is probably a hopper in the bottom to pay those payouts as you would not call an attendant on every win...

I'm still going to go with all mechanical... well for now at least.

Regarding the reel strips, I think maybe the reel window cutouts block the gaps so you don't see usual natural line of the reel bundle.....

Regarding the payouts, well there are not many and you would have to call attendant to claim the Cadillac for starters?........... And lowest layout is $5 and so equates to 20 coins on 25c coin? So the lowest could just be normal non jackpot 20 coin full stack....? Then you're only left with two and they are 60 coin and 100 coin pays so not that common, so not having to call attendant that often maybe?

Well had a quick google

Obviously not the same model but they illustrate some of the points with regard to reel strips and only one full stack payout on 25c jackpot only reel bundle with others attendant payout?

This is in no way conclusive as I have seen Aristocrats in the same cabinet with the same reel bundle but with hopper v mechanical layout, although with later models the hopper versions tended to have additional features e.g. coin counter or insert coin light etc.

What caused me concern on the original pic was the large payout tray for just 20 coins. However my money is still on an all mechanical ex casino machine that has been retired and refited onto a different base, with generic large layout tray at some later point.....?

One of downsides on a mechanical jackpots only machine like this if it's in your home environment is that it can be a bit of a boring machine to play, as only one payout is paid directly into the payout tray.......

The e/m machine version could of course bang out all the awards except the car....!

That seems a good price to me inc. the commission! I'd have bought it for that.

I asked some questions in the USA and it would seem this machine was called an "M front" and was a later version of the "Compact". The compact had an escalator and the M front a coin acceptor. Four reel versions are quite rare I'm told.

As I posted earlier, two versions of this cabinet style: Compact and M. Also, I'm told the M type came from the coin acceptor M embossing, but I wasn't 100%...........

Maybe I'm just too big a fan of It's a Mad Mad Mad World and looking for an inverted big W...........?!?
