Re: Elephant House Auctions
They weren't from the Portsmouth Dockyard collection. The working models were in identical shades of fresh red paint, suggesting a common source. The Burglar appeared to be much more original than the Drunkard's Dream and bidding reflected this.
Unfortunately Mini Teeter disgraced herself by trying to catch fire. Acrid smoke was coming out so I unplugged it and Steve blasted the innards with a fire extinguisher. I didn't investigate, but he said it was a capacitor, which is what it smelt like.

Re: Elephant House Auctions
I think the extinguisher was CO2 gas, so should have done no damage. If, as I believe, it was just a capacitor, it was going to happen anyway when the machine was next switched on. These deteriorate with age and then tend to go off rather spectacularly. To be fair to Steve, he powers up some machines to show they're not completely duff, which helps to sell them, while making it clear that all electrical items are sold as non-working. He cut the plug and explained exactly what had happened when the item came up.
Your best bet might be to leave it for the next sale. With the Summer holidays kicking in, there really wasn't a great turn out on Sunday, so I just don't think there was anyone there for the pusher.

Re: Elephant House Auctions
Well I hope you get it all working again soon without too much work.
I am sorry I cannot offer any support or advice on anything electrical, so best of luck. I am sure others with electrical experience can chip in. It could have of course done just the same thing the next time you
had used it wherever you had it before transit to the auction house.
Do you have a video link of it working? Would be great to see working.
Regards,
GP

There you go, on 14th July 2014... whilst it was in my van in preparation for the auction house.

Re: Elephant House Auctions
For what it is worth
Looking at the video of your machine, I think the fire is more likely to related to the lighting than the motor, motor capacitors in my experience tend to go bang end of! but you have a lot of strip-lights and chokes on that machine, and the chokes do tend to burn when faulty
Hope I am right and you have an easy fix on your hands

Neat machine, thanks for the youtube video.
Shame I cannot get it through my doorways - would've look great down in the cellar....
Best of luck, whatever you decide to do with it.

Re: Elephant House Auctions
At Coventry everybody is paid out on the day in cash. Less Vendors' Commission 6%
At EH it appears they keep your money in their bank account until they send you a cheque less Vendors' Commission 10%.
As I've explained before cheques being paid into your bank account are a pain for anyone self employed or if the authorities may suspect you of trading on the side.
Naturally I have a vested interest.

Re: Elephant House Auctions
Facts are not quite right re EH.
If you attend the sale and can be bothered to wait to the end of sale you can get paid out in cash like at Coventry or, if you go home early or don't attend the sale, then you can get BACS or cheque or cash if you ask, less seller's commission which is 5% if selling machines - not 10% as stated. Or if you have bought anything you can have it delivered if it can be arranged and get your cash.

Thanks Dave for clarifying, it's not too clear on the website, and it's a changing world.

Does this mean the commission is now less than Coventry?daveslot wrote:...less seller's commission which is 5% if selling machines
Cheques and BACS payments are not a problem if you're self-employed unless you use your personal account as your business account which is never a good idea.
Parkers Carousel
Does anyone know if the Parkers Carousel was the one sold at Coventry in November? If not, is someone knocking them out? £1220 is a fair old whack.

Re: Parkers Carousel
There is a story, the relevant facts, I was told ... might be .....
Most of the parts are original NOS acquired from Parker's disposal.
When married together to make a machine, it might not have been in Parker's Works.
I was told Parker's themselves have bought one back to put in their collection.
I've not seen one deliberately aged to look old, and I have owned one once.
I'm sure others could add their versions of what they'd heard.
