Nice one gameswatGameswat wrote:Need to check your exchange rates Jingle!
That looks like its affordable to holiday there again
Is it still 4 dollars for a coke in the shops
Re: Elephant House Auctions
$4 soft drinks, guess it really depends on the stores you frequent Jing - Yuppie!
Re: Elephant House Auctions
I remember when I lived there in 2004/5Gameswat wrote:$4 soft drinks, guess it really depends on the stores you frequent Jing - Yuppie!
A small super market round the corner from the house and they were
4 bucks,,a tinnie of coke
It was 2.35 to the pound then
A couple of years ago it was about 1.25 to the pound or may even of been lower
That would of been about £3 plus for cola
I got use to the tap water

Re: Elephant House Auctions
the aus exchange rate gets worse by the day,and the surprising thing is people in the money markets here cant see exactly why! I met Australians while I was in Istanbul last week who were distraut ,there travel costs were getting higher each day and some were on very long trips
Re: Elephant House Auctions
And imagine living in Perth, the most remote capitol city on earth! So transporting everything here from the east coast makes it even more expensive. Let alone from around the world. I pity any fool dumb enough to collect rare and hard to find objects in such a forlorn place.........................

Re: Elephant House Auctions
now now Gameswat ,your playing with words here, Perth is only the State capital not the national capital, mind you Canberra is a bit like Ankara and Brasilia, a pointless place to have a national capitol
Re: Elephant House Auctions
Haha, well pointed out, but people have been saying it like that for years so everyone says that. In fact it can be debated depending on 1million, more or less inhabitants of the city as to which one is the most remote. I just know that to truck, ship, post or camel anything here costs a lot!

I did hear somewhere that a number of these machines were put together from original Parker spares after the business closed, anyone know more about this?

You might well be right there, as might I if I said he attends the Coventry auction.

Re: Elephant House Auctions
I know its not our sort of thing but I just took a look at the catalogue for the horrors auction on the 11th oct,and I cant believe anyone would pay more than a couple of quid for any of it, also the term "horrors" seems to have a wide band, this is surely the scariest item on the list
ok,i agree, its pretty scarryEarly 1970's Rupert Bear Space Hopper Signed by Cast of Rainbow

Re: Elephant House Auctions
I only saw the catalogue online but it looked like a poor offering in the main, perhaps that caused a low attendance and prices suffered?
Re: Elephant House Auctions
Not sure what bargains were referred to, but I got there just in time and the room was half empty. It filled up after about 30 mins of starting so wonder if people are starting to avoid the 100 lots of spare at the beginning.
Anyway I walked away with the one machine I was after, which I never expected to get as I thought it would sell well. A Bryans Double Top, not the prettiest of his machines, but unusual play and very complex mechanism. This machine sold last year in the Bryans sale and must be one of the few on old penny as they were made form 1970. It's the same one as on Melrights site
