Also mentioned in the past is the number of serious people in the hobby as a lot who come to this site or all the facebook sites are people who just wanted a nice machine in their man room, I guess it is a small community spread over a large area.
Sooo back to our dark rooms and storage units
I think you're have hit the nail on the head TF. It is still a very small community in relation to many areas of collecting.

What's the law concerning the selling of Buses, Sherman Tanks, Transporters and Tractors?coppinpr wrote: ↑Thu Feb 15, 2018 1:13 pmAt the Kent transport show last year one guy brought 3 tractors and a Sherman tank on two transporters, and I thought a Sega continental was heavy!!Cannot believe size is an issue, people drag all sorts of objects to meets and fairs in other hobbies
there were also 65 buses, and you think we are a sad bunch of old farts
(I was selling at the Kent fair...not attending as such I hasten to add )...there were some nice buses though
After a scooter appreciation rally/get together has been publicised does someone just down the road constantly announce they are going to run an identical event on the same day?brigham wrote: The scooter scene, which I'm involved with at work, is well catered for by such meets.

Re: Auctions or lack of....
It's an interesting analogy, vintage cars and scooters etc versus vintage coin op machines
There are novice & more experienced participants in both, single machine owners & those
with collections. Those that have high value & those at entry value & all positions between.
Both have participants more interested in originality & those less motivated with originality.
But in other areas....scale of participants, local & national interaction & commercialisation!
As TF states, it matters less what the UK coinop participants are currently doing, as that can change.
That can be in a small and limited way initially but even that takes time and motivated participants.

Re: Auctions or lack of....
Do they still have a jukebox fair down South everyear? I am sure some vendors had slots on show. More like a rock n roll memorabilia event. I never attended but remember reading about the show somewhere.
Re: Auctions or lack of....
Been a few times, there were two. Generally these are supported by sellers of retro stuff mostly repro and a few Jukebox dealers. Have seen a amusement machines, but again this is more sales than a convention. Having said that they have retro cars on view and pinballs as well as a band to make an event of it.bill gates wrote: ↑Thu Feb 15, 2018 4:06 pm Do they still have a jukebox fair down South everyear? Re: Auctions or lack of....
BP rightly mentions the legal implications involved that may negatively impact
vintage coinop versus vintage car scooter analogy.
However, in my post I didn't mention that aspect as wished to keep as positive
as possible to the more varied and increased interaction within the community
that may be possible and the legal aspect being irrelevant in that.
Now I'm not and never been member of an enthusiasts club of any description,
However, some members here hopefully are or will have been members. There
must be a number of local or national events that could be applied to the coinop
community,
e.g. an evening with person X or Y 30 years of coinop anecdotes memories etc just a social event to swap
contact details etc,
Local quiz night with coinop relevant questions etc
local Saturday morning meet with person X demonstrating paint spraying or intricate casting painting
attending members paying small fee to cover their cost of paints and materials etc.
If you only have one auction or major event, can it be expanded, awards ceremony night before for best
before and after results on a budget and no expense spared. Ugliest machine of the year, Fantastic Find.
Longest journey to collect single machine.
I'm sure in the car and scooters analogy a significant number of events would never take place without
benefit of some or a number of sponsors, be that supporting magazines or brands or host of suppliers.
Its difficult to envisage that, however, it's important to have a list of what you would like to happen with
multiple resource stream then decide what's feasible now with limited resources then build from that.
But even small local interaction involves time effort and some organisation......

Being positive is to be applauded but doesn't mean the practicalities can be ignored.
Over the years Jerry and I have tried the social event angle as we believed it was commendable.
However I don't need to explain to anyone here what has really been going on and we now have a pot with more flies in it than
ointment.
Only December time (I think) I put a post on here asking who would be interested in coming to an event that was not auction led, but more of a convention. One person replied.
I'd love to attend some sort of event that wasn't reliant upon me as a co-organiser. So come on you lot, like I said earlier Facta non Verba!

Funny the last two time I suggested this, also got no response or sarcasm.
I am up for it, you could even has wish lists of machines people would love to have seen.... biggest issue is getting enough support to warrant this as I suspect you would want at least 50 and a number willing to bring items....most halls cost fom 100 to 300 to rent for a day, there is a website with thousands of them available

As an amateur in this area, I’m always up for learning from, and talking to, the experts we have on this site, I’d certainly be interested in a social meeting of some kind. If it also included a sales area then that would be great. I remember going to computer fairs regularly when people would bring what they had to sell before e-bay seemed to take over. From the various threads on this site it seems there are some collectors who have a lot of spare parts they will never use or have time to use and others would love to purchase.

Re: Auctions or lack of....
a great idea,id even be prepared to organise it, but would need commitment from a few big names to make it a worth while event,If a few of us can decide on a date and place that suits, and commit to it Ill do MOST of the work.
Where do people think it should be held? (please dont say Couden social club Coventry) we need a vibrant go ahead venue at a cross roads of the UK transport hub.....Milton Keynes I would think some sort of swap meet with technical help available, spares and machines for sale by exhibitors and a display of machines to show off.
Any one seriously interested?

Re: Auctions or lack of....
I also collect old guns and model motor racing cars (Scalextric). Both interests involve swapmeets at regular intervals somewhere in the country, often Birmingham, the National motorcycle museum being popular, for example.
The ESSENTIAL ingredient in making these events successful is that collectors will turn up expecting and hoping to add to their collections in one way or another.
This 'trade' also involves social intercourse over coffee naturally, where one's general knowledge of these things can be increased, and social contacts made.
However are there enough slot collectors likely to attend such a swapmeet with 'stuff' to sell of swap, in order to garner the attention of other collectors?
I think that is the first and most important question to answer.
If 'yes' then these events would work I think?

Re: Auctions or lack of....
you can only guess the numbers who might come by the only two purely slot events that already happen,EH and Coventry. The reasonable number who attend these events would make it seem to me that ,as long as these events were few and far between, and there was stuff to buy they would be well attended,Provided they were advertised sufficiently to the right crowd .

Re: Auctions or lack of....
There has been a lot of positive replies on this thread. An annual gathering sounds like a great idea if enough enthusiasts can get together and work something out. I would like to see other amusement machines on show, which would appeal to a wider audience. And what about the gaming laws, would this cause any problems??

Re: Auctions or lack of....
There was one at the Coventry Auction in 2014 in lovely condition, can't remember how much it went for, formed part of a complete Bryans collection that was sold over two auctions.

Re: Auctions or lack of....
that one sold for £1300 and was also in a streamline case, it would have perhaps gone higher but was immediately followed by a "ninecup" at £1600, a "Forks" at £1400 and a "U win" at £1700 so the choice was good that day. There was one at the Coventry Auction in 2014 in lovely condition, can't remember how much it went for
