Mills QT Thunderbird

Post by radiochrissie »

I see this is for auction in Ireland  looks original.
Maybe of interest to someone on here, extra costs of VAT and shipping put me off.

Very unusual payout schedule. Looks like typical 1950s British numbers, until you look a bit closer.

I didn't follow the auction but a friend said €850 plus commission?

He also said they did something like almost 2000 lots a day........!

I have a QT, not that model, but it's the only one I have had so I'm no expert but I was told a long time back that there are two versions of this one - one with less and one with more stars? Have no idea if it's true or not.

I think the hammer price is only about £50 rich, assuming all intact and working, but how often do you see them for sale?

What takes it right over the top of course are the add-ons as radiochrissie outlined. And that's without knowing the return bus fare to go and collect it.

I think at the moment prices are going silly, I've seen it happen a couple or three times during my collecting life.
The amount of machines available to market dries up, this happens due to either too many supply outlets offering a few each, who is going to travel any distance to look at a handful of machines of which only some appeal?

The other culprit is when collectors hang on to their machines because there are so few around to replace them easily. This seems to result in prices rising at the entry level. We've also noted those prices also drop.
Machines at that level are desirable to the impulse buyer and non serious slot collector which creates an unstable value.

Whereas up market machines desired by collectors increase in value less dramatically, but don't really drop ..... quality will always out.
