Coin-ops at Harrods
Coin-ops at Harrods
A little after the war I spent a wonderful vacation in England. I visited a number of seaside resorts and was fascinated with the pier machines. I also went to Harrods and found that they had a number of coin-ops for sale. In following PennyMachines posts, I have never seen Harrods' name mentioned. I would be interested if Harrods has been a good source for coin-op collectors over all those years?

Re: Coin-ops at Harrods
I didn't know, but it doesn't surprise me - I heard they sold jukeboxes, pinballs and pachinkos in the 1970s-80s. They had an office in Monte Carlo in the 1940s and ran an online casino from 2000-7.
Can you remember any particular machines?
In the 1980s you could buy slot machines a few hundred yards from the store, at Bonham's Knightsbridge saleroom.
Another famous old London department store that sold slot machines was Gamages of Holborn.

I don't recall the exact machines I viewed at Harrods but I do remember that they were priced considerably higher than what I was used to in the U.S. Quite a change in the last sixty years as present day prices in the U.S. are off the wall compared to the U.K.

It is interesting to see on the bottom right a game named "The Success", although the real French name is written in the middle of the game illustration " CO-CO-RI-CO" (cock-a-doodle-do).
A game like this was sold at Nic Costa's auction.
There are 3 different versions - the most interesting one has a little air system that reproduces a rooster when won.

I was inspired by this pic of the Gamages machines when it appeared in Nic's book and tried to acquire them all, but failed only on the Shooting for Goal machine. Has anybody ever seen one?

No, but it really is the one you'd like to see (or even better, own) isn't it?
I also want an allwin that goes "cocorico" or "cock-a-doodle-doo"!

Had the Success allwin but no sign of any sound, but something moved into the window above the cups when you won.
