He's Vulcan the Robot, "the talking fortune teller", manufactured by A M Booth of AMECO (Hong Kong Works) - see Automatic News in the Arena.
(Not to be confused with Victor the Robot).
Nice picture, by the way. Do you know which pier?

Stuart ......

You have an uncanny knack for stumbling over the most atmospheric photos, I've long suspected you have your own time machine.

That one is a belter and screams out "Caption Competition" although at the moment nothing springs to mind for me I'm sure others are champing at the bit.

Hahaha! But seriously, that was a pretty cutting edge location with at least two Talkie machines. One day someone needs to find a location shot with the Auto Talkie sound Mutoscope, and make John Petersons and my week!

Lady on left: "My, that Vulcan has a very large head, hasn't he? He must be much smarter than I. I shall never be as popular as Vulcan."

Lady on right: "Yes, Dear, but don't despair; your chest is much larger."
