Oliver Whales CHAD WOT? allwin
Oliver Whales CHAD WOT? allwin
Hi - currently restoring three of these at once. Can anybody fill me in on the significance of the name CHAD? I'm assuming it's the British counterpart to KILROY? Pulled them out of the attic of an old tyme coin-op restorer in California back in 2007.

W O T ???
Topic merged - site admin.
Hello everyone,
Just got a lead on two machines and wanted to know if anyone had any comments (good or bad) before I part with the cash.
I do have the usual questions... Who made them? What year would they be?
W O T ????
Thanks,
scottie.

Re: W O T ???
"Wot" is definitely Oliver Whales. The red highlights on the casing and the look is mid-'40s for my money.
I have no idea on #2.

What - Me worry??

The second machine has a Philip Shefras Ltd badge with address at Hollybush Place, Bethnal Green road, London E2. Not sure when he was operating though?

Seen one or two of the second type allwin before but, until now, did not know anything about them, they have a very distinctive style payout cup.Gameswat wrote:The second machine has a Philip Shefras Ltd badge with address at Hollybush Place, Bethnal Green road, London E2
With the arched door and sloping coin entry, I wonder if this brings us closer to the Mystery 50s manufacturer (Philip Shefras Ltd) as discussed on the 7 year old thread in the Open Forum?

Yahoo AnswersOakLey46 wrote:Chad was a ubiquitous piece of popular culture graffiti seen in the United Kingdom during and shortly after World War II.
The graffito consisted of a cartoon of a small, round head with a long nose poking over the top of a wall, with a complaint about shortages written underneath; the cartoon itself is better known to many as "Kilroy", since it often accompanied the slogan "Kilroy was here". It also appeared in Australia captioned "Foo was here".
The origin may be the cartoonist George Edward Chatterton (or "Chat") in 1938, although it is unclear how it gained widespread popularity or became conflated with Kilroy. It was, however, widely in use by the late part of the war and in the immediate post-war years, with slogans ranging from the simple "What, no bread?" or "Wot, no char?" to the plaintive; one sighting, on the side of a British 1st Airborne Division glider in Operation Market Garden, had the complaint "Wot, no engines?"
As rationing became less common, so did the joke; while the cartoon is occasionally sighted today as "Kilroy", "Chad" and his complaints have long fallen from popular use.
See also: Kilroy was here
There's an early example like yours Scottie, with a nice mirror top (mostly obscured by gentleman in front) on the Whales & White trade stand photo.
If only we could pan a little further to the right, we might also see the Allwin Supreme on Philip Shefras's stand!
Also, in Resources, there's an Oliver Whales invoice for a Chad dated 29/01/1957.
Here's an example I sold a few year's ago.

Interesting.... Thanks everyone...
I just got another email from "this person"......
I have a funny feeling this "might" be a SCAM....
They sent me more close-up pictures... but they're of a different machine.
The background of all the pictures is "blank" - no hint of the machines being in their garage, living room etc.... and the price, including shipping, is cheap!!! ...real cheap.
Anyone ever heard of a place called... Ancient Victory?
I really like the look of the two machines and wanted to buy them...
I will keep you posted.

Re: Oliver Whales CHAD WOT? allwin
That's how scammers reel you in!
Ancient Victory? ..... Google says ... Huh?
If it was me and I thought it was a chancer having a go at me, I'd waste his time and have some fun. I once kept a Nigerian Prince occupied for 3 weeks.
Offer to agree to his payment requirements easily then gloss over it and ask him if multi hinged pendulum cutters are fitted to the anti-cheat gate on either of them as it makes them more valuable.
As the shipping is so cheap could he also package up another machine you're buying near to him if you can get it dropped off by the vendor. You'll happily pay up front in cash in advance for it all. How much would that add to it? What's his post/zip etc?
Always end with a question that'll give him a bit of thinking about to keep you happy but tempts his greed.
I hope it's kosher and works out for you.

And the other one is from Clicky
Compliment him on his sheer white wallpaper and ask him if he can give you decorating tips.

Thank you so much Badpenny and Pennymachines...
Yes, they're the same pictures. Just got another email from the so called seller - they told me they are in the U.S.A.... Ah.... So I told them my brother lives there and would it be OK if he picked the machines up, so it would save them the cost of shipping them to me... I wonder what story they will come up with now...
Darn - I was really looking forward to buying them.
Scottie.

I don't know about Mr P but I used two free applications.
1) One is part of Google itself. You can download it from Google Chrome Application Shop, when you put the cursor on an image and right click Google starts searching for the image and similar ones world wide.
2) Application called TinEye which is the same sort of thing.
For example if I click on the Forum Logo on this page top right hand corner.
This what TinEye tells me ......
1 Result https://pennymachines.co.uk
Searched over 2.2182 billion images in 0.813 seconds.
for file: styles/3myl_sable/im...
I'm sure others know of even more ways of doing this and probably even better?
All very handy, but I still have a drawer upstairs with over a dozen odd socks!

Nothing quite as sophisticated with me.
I saw it while researching the mystery (Philip Shefras) Allwin Supremes.
Having found reference to its sale at Cowan's on other sites I used a Google Advanced Search function to pin down the specific sale.
Put allwin supreme site:cowanauctions.com into Google to restrict your search to that domain or site - very useful for sites with inadequate or no internal search facility.

They probably are, as they were both American auctions...Scottie wrote:they told me they are in the U.S.A....
