Whittaker Brothers Countdown pusher identified

Post by treefrog »

Never owned a pusher and probably due to the size never will, although been tempted by the many table top versions. This one on ebay at the moment to me is so stylish and small, if only I had the extra 28inch's

I think is it is double sided, but I love the cabinet/glass style. Although probably 1970s, to me it looks more 1960s in style. Anyone know who made this as I have never seen one before?

It was made by Whittaker Brothers in Oldham, around mid '70s,
They also made a square 4 player one.

Yes Chapsneck you are quite right. The machine is called 'Countdown' and was manufactured by Whittaker Brothers circa 1975. It is a 2 player back to back model and came out AFTER the original 4 player square version. It would have originally had a small top box with the words Countdown on it. The windows are made of Perspex. If you look closely at the photograph, this model had a slanting top. As time progressed slight modifications were made to the 4 player and the 2 player and they were re-introduced with slight differences. For example the later two player model had a 'flat' roof and updated 'Countdown' top box artwork. If I am not mistaken I believe the original 4 player square version (also called Countdown) was Whittaker Brothers first pusher. I cannot find any information anywhere that would suggest otherwise.

The one on ebay is missing the backflash which seperates it in the middle.

Does anyone own a countdown pusher? My favourite pusher from the '80s. Missed this one when on eBay a few years ago.

:WELCOME: countdown!
I don't recall seeing this machine in any arcade. What made it attractive to play and why was it called Countdown?

Possibly countdown because the coins went down the tube. Used to be one in the small pleasure beach ride park in Southport in the '70s and '80s. I remember the guard was off the machine so a lot bounced bad and the deck built up. You could get some big drops. The place is now a McDonald's and retail park. Used to like one called Klondike also as well as Moonraker.

Been after a pusher again recently. Might use the image to put a few wanted ads on sites like shpock. I used to know a chap in Scotland called Kenneth who I bought a pusher off but have lost his details.

I used to operate a 2 player Countdown pusher on old 10p, very reliable in that it never jammed from the slot to the deck as coins just drop straight down. The 2 player version also fits through most standard door sizes. I recall another operator got into trouble with these, tearing ten pound notes in half and putting one half in either side. Nice wide chute for other swag to drop down.

Countdown is the name of the machine I originally posted 4 ago years on this thread with a picture for those that asked. It made £156.50 if you follow the link... Seemed cheap to me as smaller pushers used to make around 300.
