BBC Collectaholics seek collectors

Post by pennymachines »

I was contacted today by a researcher from independent television production company RDF Television, currently working on the second series of Collectaholics for BBC2's "primetime show presented by antiques expert Mark Hill which explores people’s passion for collecting".
We want to speak to all kinds of people, from those who are constantly searching for that elusive final piece, or maybe their collection is taking over their homes and they may want help to display, curate or thin out the collection. We want to find out about their collections and what inspired them to start.
If you're interested in taking part, here are the contact details:

Hmmm? !PUZZLED!

I don't think I need national TV pointing out to the world that I am inflicted and what with.
Especially the curating or thinning out of my detritus, particularly in the light of the legal situation. :o

Now if they want to browse my stack of Bladeless Knives with no handles they're welcome.

Like BP and the first collector this company approached, I have no desire to appear on TV, so I passed this information on in case others might welcome the opportunity. I'm sure the uppermost concerns would be privacy and security, but I didn't even consider the old legality chestnut. The Gambling Commission assured us last year that they have no desire to go after genuine collectors, but equally, it would appear they were unable to come up with anything concrete to protect us from the regulations as they stand, should a third party force their hand.

If a collector was willing to appear on the programme, the absurdity of the situation could be made known to a much wider audience, which I think would put us in a stronger position.

In my opinion Mr P any footage waffling on about the daftness of UK laws would be more likely to end up on the editing floor.

Quite possibly, but helping to optimise collections by finding the market for and selling extraneous items was a big part of the previous programmes, so it could be tricky to ignore.

Mr Moderators, me thinks if you were offering debate about whether to share once hovels with the general public, perhaps you should have placed your add on a forum we can all join as only moderators can add to announcements....In my case, it would be more for the hoarders program than collectors obsessions where they would be giving therapy. Mind you I think if someone did it would be good for the hobby as it would open up to other potential collectors. I do not believe the Gaming Commission would care a hoot about a bunch of men with ancient wall mounted pinball machines.
.
Mr BP, bladeless/handless knives, funny an favourite phrase of yours, only the other day I read an artical advertising some do at your pub the Fox Inn in the AAM with the same term of phrase, that was 14 years ago..... :woops:

OK - I've moved and merged the topic here. I didn't realize the Announcement forum only allowed mods to reply. May see if I can change that.

I rarely watch daytime TV, but the shows I have seen are often about people working the grey market at auctions, car boots and the like. My first thoughts were, why would these, in many cases, benefits claimants, want to expose their unearned income and expenditure to the wider audience. I prefer my privacy and don't want 10 minutes of fame on a second rate TV show which will be forgotten the next day

Quite right raj, except it'll be remembered by the wrong people, especially when it keeps cropping up on DAVE.

I would not want to be involved in the programme, although not for the reasons given by others. I don't believe any one's going to be interested in the legal position (although as I understand it is not against the law to own these machines for your own use and collection or, if it is, no one much cares - you just can't buy or sell). My main reason for not taking part would be that I don't have a good enough collection.
I've been on several of these programmes with my work and other interests both on TV and radio and it has to be said the response from the public is huge, even repeats generate a lot of interest. If we were interested in raising the profile of our hobby and getting more people involved nothing could be better, that is for sure. It would also be a good chance to highlight the stupid laws, which would not get cut I'm certain - it's just the sort of media fuss the TV likes.
The exposure of the individual involved is minimal, as others say, the details are forgotten the next day... but the idea remains and gets talked about, no doubt about it.

If the producers would not mind a short plane ride across the pond, I'd be delighted to share my collection. It's mostly bundled in the garage but what fun we could have digging through the pile!

The last of the three collectors featured in Episode 8, Series 2 of Collectaholics was Lancashire-based retro video arcade enthusiast Andy who has "over 300 vintage arcade machines hidden away in a 3000 square foot unit on an industrial estate. With everything from Space Invaders and Pac-Man to Donkey Kong, he'd love nothing more than to share his collection with other enthusiasts." These games are for the most part larger than the ours, and he has hit upon a clever solution that could help finance restoration and storage costs. Around 100 of the working machines are made available in an 'Arcade Club' and for £10 the public get four hours nostalgic video game indulgence.

It's available for another 17 days on BBC iPlayer.
