The Cardinal
The Cardinal
Just about to start on this and wondered if anyone had any info on it at all?
Only ones I can find had bubble gum in them,. This one has all the works inside for bubble gum and even a refill flap on the back, but nowhere for a gumball to come out of.
Also, I cannot find another one with the same reels? Have they been replaced? If not, any idea what the two end reels are meant for as there is nothing on the award card about them?

Re: the cardinal
I've seen this model before, it's certainly made by Pace, most likely in 1935, which I guess you already knew.
It's very like the "New Deal Jackpot" which has the same top case but a bottom case with a jackpot the operator unlocked when the jackpot came up. This machine also had no gum ball delivery system.
The reels are most likely correct. If they don't agree with the payout card then the card has been changed as the reels could well be correct.
The reels can be be a mix of fruits, numbers and playing cards that relate to the correct payout card. The "New Deal" had similar but not identical reels. The difference here looks like the fruits are the first three reels and the other two are multiplier and a fortune teller/life advice reels (the card reel could also be used by competing players for high/low bets (like cutting cards) whereas the "New Deal" had the reels mixed up. I've seen the Cardinal with all playing card reels, a mix of reels and most often letters and numbers. The letters can form the word "BEER" which I guess got you a free beer. All the others I've seen do have a gum ball delivery system.

Interesting Paul, thank you.
It's obvious the missing strip is fruits but I cannot work out what the numbers and cards are meant to be for?

Re: the cardinal
Sorry, I misread what you were saying. It could be the award card is wrong, I get it now. I will need to try and find one the same somewhere to look.
Re: the cardinal

Also try "coinopcollector" forum over the pond.
It's free to register and a helpful bunch of mostly American collectors. It usually takes a couple of days to get any replies though.

Re: The Cardinal
As I stated in a previous post Bill Whelan lists Cardinal poker strips style CCH 10 symbol 10 stop 6 inch diameter by 1 inch wide reels @ $18 a set.
He also lists award card 5 reel poker 3 inches x 1-1/2 inches and one 3-1/2 x 5-1/16 @$5.

Re: The Cardinal
Hi JRA,
I got a catalogue off Bill with all the strips in it and was quite happy to purchase some from him. He sent a message back saying the beer ones weren't in stock, so I answered saying I will take the card ones that he had in stock. I never heard anything back from him, even after several emails over a few weeks?
So I am guessing he is ignoring me or just doesn't want to sell them to me? Whatever the reason, I don't know, but I need some strips, so need to find some elsewhere.

Hi Widget,
Sorry about that, I have been dealing with Bill for the last 10 years or so, never had any trouble myself. I know he goes away for weeks to his other house, so you may have caught him at one of those times when he is away.
