Re: Caille / Clement & Whales Countertop disc machines
I just bought another of these machines and found an interesting bit of paperwork, well I thought interesting, pinned to the back door.
Re: Caille / Clement & Whales Countertop disc machines
Nice bit of history to go with machine.... Do we get to see the rest of it?

I'm guessing it was this one, sold by Eighteen Eighteen Auctioneers a few days ago.
E Steel, Amusement Caterer of Redcar is a new one to me. It definitely adds something to have this cool bit of the machine's history attached.

Re: Caille / Clement & Whales Countertop disc machines
I am hoping someone can help, I need to find or reproduce a back cover plate from the coin head on a Caille Ben Hur / Commercial. It's the rounded top version. Does anyone have a photo they could post or maybe even have a spare for sale?

Re: Caille / Clement & Whales Countertop disc machines
The reason so many are missing their back plate is because they forever needed clearing.
When I had one I made a replacement by buying a small sheet of thin gauge aluminium sheet from a modelling shop.
Make a cardboard template that fits the gap and then cut from that.
It's easy to bow it slightly to fit and add a turn catch from the waste that you cut off.

Cheers, I can make one pretty easily as you say with ali or brass. It would be nice to see if the plate had any pattern on it. I would like to reproduce an accurate copy.

Well, another counter disc Greyhound machine. Anyone know the originality of this one? Obviously another early Brit machine in origin.

Very interesting, but it looks as though it started life in a different case.
Re: Caille / Clement & Whales Countertop disc machines
Yes, there appears to be frame castings with mounts at the bottom hanging freely, so I assume it was mounted like the normal Clement type machines. So what was the original machine?
Anyway, not mine, yet another lost soul losing it way deep in the Blue Ridge mountains somewhere loaded into containers for a pound or two.

Saw this on the EH site. Not one I've seen before but looks intriguing. Does anyone have any experience of these and does it look fixable at first sight?

Re: Caille / Clement & Whales Countertop disc machines
I've moved and merged your query to this thread Brian, because it contains lots of info about these. First thing to note, although they're regularly called 'Caille Commercials', they were made in the UK by Clement & Whales.
You can compare the mechanism with the one pictured here. It appears to be complete. The 'cosmetics' - wormy case, lost veneer and chrome etc. are all fixable if you have the time, patience and a modicum of skill. You would want to try to cycle the mechanism to see if it's jammed. If it is, bid on the understanding that when unjammed other problems may become apparent. If it manages to spin and halt the disc, that's encouraging. If you can trigger a payout, it's

Re: Caille / Clement & Whales Countertop disc machines
I've had a couple and the most common mess about mechanically that I found was the stops on the Star Reel having been braized shut, payout fingers bent and slides drilled and braized all to avoid the top payouts.
The nuisance is to get at the Star Reel you have to remove a lot of the mech from the back and then the dial on the front, so it's essential you get the dial back on exactly as it came off or the payouts are all to cock. Then when you reassemble everything you took off the back you'll need to recalibrate every part because you'll have unscrewed the adjustments in order to remove them.

Re: Caille / Clement & Whales Countertop disc machines
The top and bottom of case might be salvageable but it's got ply sides and front, so they are going to need replacing. By the way, does anybody know what the coin-slot looking bit is for (it's just below the dial)?

Re: Caille / Clement & Whales Countertop disc machines
It does look pretty wormy, but maybe possible to stabilise and strengthen the ply by squirting epoxy filler into the holes, as it's going to be hidden by veneer. Of course the wooden back door is also missing (not hard to replicate) and the metal coin head backplate (not so easy).
I think it's just some sort of metal tag/label, similar to one pictured on the first page of this thread.
Re: Caille / Clement & Whales Countertop disc machines
Thanks for all your help and advice again guys. I'm not too worried about the case as I'm happyish to work on that and replace as necessary (brilliant recycled wood store nearby) . Am more concerned about the mechanics so I guess, pennymachines, your advice is sound - go to the auction and have a play with it, and try to cycle it first. If that fails I'm minded to walk away as it sounds (your comments noted badpenny) like it'll be beyond my limited skills Just thought it would make an interesting change from the alwins I've been working on.

Alternatively, I suppose it could be a skill stop button...pennymachines wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2017 5:58 pmI think it's just some sort of metal tag/label, similar to one pictured on the first page of this thread.
