Caille / Clement & Whales Countertop disc machines

American, British, French or German? We want to know about it.

Yes, some markings etc on the mech. Am I right in presuming there are machines with remade cabinets and Caille mechs and also remade cabinets and remade mechs then? It must have been so difficult to copy someone else's mech and castings!

Such a classic address: Gasholder Lane and Railway arch 427, reminds me of Steptoe and Sons address ...Oil Drum Lane.

The railway arch address still exists. If this link works, it's about four arches down this small road:

Not sure this got answered, but if you trawl through this thread you will see one I posted earlier and suggestions possible Essex Co. based item by Clement and Whales after re-case.... They seemed to have done a few greyhound modified machines, some of which have yet to be identified, including the one with the handle below I found in the States. I still have the Little Duke based machine, again re-cased and modified for spinning disk use.....

Thank you TREEFROG....
That's a nice clear answer "with" pictures....
The reason I'm asking is there's one on ebay, just like the second picture you posted. The one on ebay does have the metal top flash (sign). It reads that it's made in London by (and it's misspelled) RUFFLER & WALKER.

I'm guessing someone just put the metal top on it and printed it up and stuck it on, but then put "play quarters only"...looks like the coin entry would take the large pennies... and the insides look complete with very little work to convert it from U.S.A. quarters back to pennies.
Thank you once again treefrog.

I think, as you say, the Caille Ben Hur cast top has been added later.

I just took the time to look the item up on eBay and sure enough that mech has nothing to do with the typical Caille style, but in fact looks very close to the Essex mechs used in the Corn Exchange and Stock Exchange. The payout cup in the lower cashbox door is also a classic design as used by Essex.

Well done Scottie.

You're ticking off your wants list. I remember when you'd have sold your Granny for a sweetie allwin …… or have you run out of Grannies?

Hello B.P.

Another single slot Greyhound Stadium at last Sunday's EH sale (I suspect the pediment was added later), and a Clement & Whales Commercial.

T'would be interesting to see the inside of yours jimmy.

I'll wager a snifter of jollop to a crate of codswallop it's different to the Caille/Clement & Whales cast iron, built in a shipyard edifice that needs at least two men in the engine room variety.

Do like these Greyhound Stadium machines, wouldn't mind owning one. It would be great to see the more basic machine in play, as far as I know they are just 2,4 and 6 penny payouts. Someone out there must have one in working order?

That looks like a genuine Caille, whereas most of the British machines are questioned whether they are repurposed Caille machines or ones using recast parts. Can never remember whether there was a final conclusion on this.

Henk, easy way to tell is remove a handful of different diameter bolts and check the thread gauge, if it's Caille they'll be UNC/F and British made will by BSW, and think the French made copies of Caille too so those would be Metric.
