Boland Black Beauty, Screen Stars, Brooklands, White City...
Re: Boland Black Beauty, Screen Stars, Brooklands, White City...
Yes, I bought one mentioned on this thread below, the Jockey Club. All the signs of a Bolands and using a Jennings Victoria as a base.

The Brooklands Museum in Surrey has a nice original machine in a display case
Just finished another one myself which had previously been stripped by the owner.

Here's another wooden single reel Film Stars.

Hi Neil, you could also look on the ELEPHANT HOUSE WEBSITE archives - they have sold a few, just to give you some idea!

With the way Boland "mixed and matched" the ironmongery on their machines it is unusual to find two exactly the same but mine looks identical to the one Mr P. posted above.
On reviewing the post I can see I'm wrong, mine has metal side strips, so, as always, just a little different every time.

I guess the metal bands were added later to remedy or prevent flaking veneer which tends to occur with these.

I've not seen this Boland before

Interesting payouts, running on 3d. What should we call it, "It's a Gift" or "Special Prize"?

This was discussed in this thread (Page 10) a year ago when Shpock for £700, now half the price. Now can see inside the cabinet, which I think is a replacement. Also the special badge may have not originally been on this machine as there are two small holes further out for an award like the Black Beauty or similar variants.

The bandit above was catalogued as Firman's in last Sunday's EH auction. It's the same as the unpainted example on page 5 of this topic. I saw nothing to confirm the Firman attribution. As far as I know only Boland converted American three-reelers to single reel (Hooper Automatics single reelers were built from scratch).

Article written by Tom Boland in 1948
Topic merged - Site Admin.
While researching for a new page for the www.penny-arcade.info site about Tom Boland I caught a passing remark about him writing an article for Billboard Magazine. It took some searching out, and perhaps it's been on this site before, but I thought I'd put it in case not. Problem is, I can't get it to come out clearly so I'm hoping Mr P will do his magic and copy it correctly. It's on pages 96 and 116 of the 7th august 1948 issue. It doesn't say a lot, but it's interesting that he wrote this for the USA mag. Interestingly, it came out the same week Jack Keeney died - the obituary is on the same page.

Screen Snapshots. All the old Perspex was removed from the red/yellow machine to find a case in multiple pieces, mech was good so rechromed, repainted and lightly oiled the mech and put back together

These bandits look quite stunning all tarted up. The base of yours appears to be chromed, unlike the wooden base pictured, top of page?
Bolands were more or less ignored when I started collecting, because they were regarded as mutilated Mills bandits. The tide seems to have turned.

I love these machines, they look so good when revived and you don't feel too bad about changing them from the original.
Just a week ago I added "the Tom Boland collection" page to www.penny-arcade.info, some nice machines to see and more to follow
