Re: Current List of Old Penny Arcades
Nice little blog here about JC's Brighton seafront Mechanical Memories Vintage Amusement Arcade from Ellie & Co. Guide to Secret Brighton.
Re: Current List of Old Penny Arcades
H,
With all these arcades still running, are they still making a crust for people operating them? And do the public actually understand them as when I've watched people playing them they always seem to look slightly confused and unsure? Cheers

Re: Current List of Old Penny Arcades
I've added the above to the updated list of Locations in the new Archive and removed those that have fallen by the wayside. If you know of others, please post them there.
Does anyone know if Cheddar Crazy Golf has amusement machines again this year?
Another I'm unsure about (having never visited) is Brighton Museum and Art Gallery. Does it still house a circa 1884-1915 coin-operated model steam locomotive, a tin-type Mutoscope and an Adelphi Manufacturing Co. Gipsy fortune teller?
Are there still working models by Bolland and Kraft at York Castle Museum?
Any news on Old Penny Memories, Chris?
I'll try to get an update from Clive about his current enterprises.

Penny machine arcades
Topic moved & merged - Site Admin.
Is there a topic (can't find it) of active working penny arcades around the country. Would it be possible to have its own category on the start up menu?

Re: Penny machine arcades
And updated again a few days ago to mark Darren's Botany Bay arcade as 'now closed' and an update on the status of Clive's operations. News expected soon of a new vintage arcade...

Re: Current List of Old Penny Arcades
Okay, well it's not strictly an old penny arcade but you can find the following machines in this arcade.' Pagham Beach Amusements PO21 3FA' Is run by Dean. His father Joe passed away a few years back and they were in the trade since the '50s.
Six Bally Gold Award bandits paying out the gold award for trade of goods.
Plethora of other Bally one up bandits, Lucky Twins, Lucky Strike etc.
Brenco ring vendors (two, one in the arcade and one in the cafe)
Streets Wheel Em In - Seventies model (yellow).
Streets Colorama - Big tennis ball on a roulette style wheel, blue/red pays 2, green 4, yellow 6 and white 10, place bet and wait.
Bally small flipper pinball.
Indoor alley bowling game, sixties.
For those into the later nudge nudge type machines, some classic up down nudgers from the early '80s. Of course lots of other modern machines too and coin pushers, games etc. If you are in the Bognor area it's worth a visit (just to play the Streets Wheel Em In is cool) and Dean is very friendly and can chat to you about your interests. His family's cafe in same strip is very good and you can look at the sea too. Generally open in the holiday seasons.

Re: Current List of Old Penny Arcades
Love playing the Colourama and Wheel Em In (when they are working). Last year Dean had a number of Bally gold awards on 2p play for sale at £100 each, non working but good chrome. I suspect they are still available. Still enjoy getting the gold award position and being able to choose a gift of your choice from the sliding glass cabinet above the machines. As Malc says, good cafe, also a 'bucket and spade' shop. It's a small resort but has a certain old feel charm.

Re: Current List of Old Penny Arcades
Yes Rebel, he has quite a few that are not working and this unfortunately is down to the fact his father Joe was the mechanic behind the fixing and would transplant transformers and parts to make a good working machine. They actually used to supply and service Butlins in the late sixties and early seventies with Jubilee and Aristocrat bandits, rows upon rows of them but moved to Ballys due to their profitability, increased speed of play, less jams and fiddling. Ive traded two Ballys to this arcade (one still working in the arcade) in exchange for a lovely jubilee riviera and an Aristocrat Esprit.
Penny arcade in Oxfordshire
Topic moved & merged - Site Admin.
A fairly new penny arcade has opened in Witney, Oxfordshire. It's situated in The Shake Shop (upstairs) on the high street. It consists of about a dozen machines including an Ice Hockey, Time Limit allwin, Carousel allwin, 3-4 bandits (German), 1930s small fortune teller (nice rare thing), pusher, Challenger, etc. It also has an American Diner with a very nice set of 1930s fortune teller scales and jukebox. It's open every day.

Funny how these things appear... There is a walk through of the shop on google maps... It appears they have had machines at least 4 years and I recognise a few from the Elephant House, like the pusher... I would have assumed the owner of them is known, but maybe not.
I wonder how many calories there are in a double chocolate shake with marshmallow.

Re: Current List of Old Penny Arcades
Had a look today at Darren Hesketh's Penny Arcade at Bygone Times, Eccleston, Lancashire.
He still has his original arcade on the ground floor, and now has a slightly bigger arcade in the basement area.
Darren was still setting up his machines when I visited, but informed me both arcades will be open in the next couple of days.
I've included some pictures of both arcades, well worth a visit when you're in the area.

Re: Current List of Old Penny Arcades
Just added to Archive/Locations a recently opened vintage amusement arcade north of Bradford at Woodbank Nurseries & Garden Centre, Harden Road, Harden, Bingley. BD16 1BE. Excellent choice of classic machines to play in a suitably seaside-themed arcade.

Portsmouth historic dock

Been in Portsmouth this weekend and visited the historic docks to see the victory and Mary rose whilst I was there popped into the souvenir/eatery shop for a coffee on the way to the toilets across the back wall to my amazement are a collection of working bygone machines the sort of stuff we crave on here just wish I had taken pictures of all of them but here's what I did get! Definitely worth a visit!
