Bryan’s Pilwin convert & replace backflash
Bryan’s Pilwin convert & replace backflash
Hi folks,
I have decided to convert my machines back to old penny. I am starting with my Pilwin 56. Any advise on how or where to get/make the coin hopper as mine is missing completely and has been replaced by one that holds new penny.

Hi pauljt71, these are always difficult to source and it is extremely rare to see them on any bidding site or auction, best short-term bet would be to have one made up by a local metalworker, may even be able to modify your existing coin hopper
Re: Bryan’s Pilwin convert back to old penny
I've had to make and convert countless payouts like that back to Old Penny, none for Bryans allwins though. And I often found the correct diameter brass tube was often used in old style garden sprayers, the ones with a bike pump hand piece, usually attached to a backpack tin holding the chemical. And also some old floor type car/bike pumps had the correct tubing. It's much easier ( and cheaper!) to recycle pre-metric metal tubing than waste a lot of time machining oversize to the correct diameters.

Pilwin back flash replacement

Hi Guys,
Thought I would share some pics of my Pilwin through the process of replacing a back flash to return it to play again. Many thanks to Lenny at Retro Arcade for supplying me with a great replacement that looks just like the old one, minus the ripples!
The whole process took about 3 hours. It’s my first attempt. Going to do my Elevenses next

Well it’s finished, backflash replaced and converted back to old penny. I have to say it plays so differently with old pennies

Cracker Jack job, Pauljt 71 ! I'm happy to see there is still enthusiasm for the old allwins out there.

Well done Paul on an excellent job reviving your Pilwin so that it can be enjoyed again.
This is more observation than complaint. There isn't an ideal solution. Unfortunately, the economics of bespoke screen printing seems to rule out perfect reproduction plastic flashes.
The point at which it's better to replace an old backflash, try to flatten it, or leave well alone, has been much discussed and comes down to personal preference. There's no right answer that we'll all agree upon. Also, things can look worse or better than they really are in photographs. However, before everyone rushes to replace their less than perfect Elevenses and Pilwin flashes with Retro Arcade reproductions, I should point out that the Bryan's fans amongst us will know 'in a flash' it's not original. And not just because it's flat. I don't dispute Retro Arcade's claim that, "colours are a perfect match to the original", but it's apparent from the images above that they're less saturated. The reason, I believe, is that they're printed on card. The texture of card (or paper) diffuses the reflected light and, although the plastic encapsulation enhances it (like varnish over wood), it can't match the intensity of colour screen-printed plastic.

Re: Bryan’s Pilwin convert & replace backflash
Does anyone know why the stripes on later Bryans backflash travels in the opposite diagonal to most of the earlier machines? I was told that Jim Bryan make a cockup when ordering, but I'm not convinced of this.

Re: Bryan’s Pilwin convert & replace backflash
Over the years I've heard many explanations from ...
Printer's error
Ordering error
Marking introduction of Decimalisation
Boredom
The original direction was wrong, but he'd had so many made it took that long to use them up
I don't believe any of them, so I also wait to hear who else has heard what else.

1 or 2 sound very plausible. Forgetting to invert a design (with no text) for reverse screen printing is easily done.
On the other hand, this early Bryans Fivewin, made before they printed the stripey flashes, has the cut out strips in the 'wrong' direction...

Re: Bryan’s Pilwin convert & replace backflash
I thought that fivewin backflash was the intended 'right' direction. I was told by someone who acquired a back flash from Jim Bryan which was striped from the hammer box that Jim said it was printer error but he went ahead and used them anyway.
